Sample Wars was a separate site that was very short lived. Members would upload samples and two peeps would have a day to make a song using a random selection of samples. Others would then vote. The cool thing about botb is we have so many other formats and we could really take it to another level!

Pit Fights are a theoretical concept almost as old as the site itself. There have been many conversations in the past about this. How long should they be? Do BotBrs have to make their entries at the same time? Can it be incorporated into a giant bracketed tournament?

Here's my ideas for this:

Every time a major battle ends, arrange a pit fight between first and second place of any given format (example: first and second place of wildchip). It could be random, or it could be organized by either the users or the site itself. Make sure both users confirm their participation so no undesired battles will happen.

Example scenario:

Random NPC: User A gets 1st place on the wildchip category with User B coming a close second place. Let's pit these two stars against each other and see what awesome things come out of it!
User A: OH SHIT I GOTTA GO SOMEWHERE ELSE JUST TODAY SRY MAN
User B: Dammit >:C
Random NPC: Okay that didn't work out let's do something else okay


In the spirit of the site they should make their stuff at the same time. One day is good, but maybe one hour pit fights could work too? Feels like implementing this feature would be a tough challenge with interesting results.

Alternatively, just make sporadic pit fights in the same way OHBs are arranged.

I'd like some kind of thing where everyone interested in participating in an upcoming brawl is assigned a random adversary from the pool of names who submitted themselves after a registration period, and then moving up a bracket.
I feel like each individual battle should get a different theme, OHB style. The themes could come from any botbr, and all participants would be required to submit their own alongside their entry fee. The themes would then be picked at random for each battle.

I also like the idea of people declaring 1v1 on each other, but am generally more partial to the aforementioned style.

Proposition:

Creation of an ELO ranking system based on percentage of golds, silvers, bronzes, and tins compared to total amount of entries and multiplied by average score or something

This way, if people get randomly assigned adversaries, it's less likely that some ascended botbr gets placed against someone who just started using openmpt a couple months ago or something. No one likes an unfair match.

btw if there's 1v1 pit fights eventually, I think awarding gold and silver medals wouldn't be too cool because it would interfere with real medals you get from ohbs. Use a separate "pit fights won/lost" stat.

elo is a very specific mathematical rating algorithm based on ternary (win/lose/draw) outcomes in two-player (or two-team) games. this algorithm would be completely applicable to pit fight results but completely inapplicable to the existing corpus of data on botb. so you could certainly calibrate a rating system based on a user's botb placement history but please call it something else haha

i guess you could add some edge case logic and treat every battle and/or category as a set of games between each participant and every other participant but at that point you're hitting a nail with a screwdriver

In general I think there should be longer battles, not just one hour. Maybe 2hour, 3hour, 4 hour, 12 hour, 24 hour, 48 hour, etc.

I mean, at least allow battle creators to select from a dropdown menu.

I feel like the basic "A challenges B; B accepts; Pit Fight starts" model makes the most sense to begin with, then maybe figure out all the fancy tourney stuff on top of it later.

A question I don't think has been asked yet is how the system should handle forfeits and no-shows. Also, admin folk are gonna need to keep an eye on things to make sure people aren't cheating the system by battling their own alts.

Negative Forfeitist points? There's also the issue of whether BotBrs must make their entries simultaneously or not. If they do it would cut down on alt bullshit, but really I'm feeling neutral on that issue -- if BotBrs want to spend their time doing 2 entries they must still succumb to the voters. I could totally wrong with this opinion though.

My idea was that the person who forfeits simply loses the boons that they threw in and loses. But if you want to make Forfeitist points a thing on top of that then sure!

And about the whole simultaneous thing, if a noob wants to make a song in an hour when they have 12 then that is their decision. As long as it's within that 12hr period then I certainly have no porblem with that.

Also, let's say we use the collab feature for the pitfights (2v2, or XvX) and one fighter decides to use their alt as their collab partner then i think that is okay as well. Regardless of how many are fighting this should be 1 song vs 1 song! And boons need to be divvied up in such a way that you can't game teh system and make an unfair profit.

Puke seems to have some totally different idea that I personally am not down with (2 songs VS 1 song?).... Not sure how that would work fairly.

maybe there can be a casual approach to this. users can create "pit" battles that are on a first come, first fight basis. ofc the OP would have to accept the challenge after an opponent has requested to accept the challenge. even better, maybe there can be a sign up list and users will be paired with other botbrs at random, ala mass 1v1. all of these are really cool ideas though. would be down for 1v1 in any shape or form.

also forfeiting/forfeit points? screw that buzz, if you're in for a 1v1 you win or you lose. it's a death battle. if you don't come with your blade sharpened, prepared to have an orifice blown apart.

There are countless threads like this where the community collaborates on a feature concept. Sometimes these threads can go 50+ posts deep w/o me saying anything one way or the other (usually in that case I have no interest in implementing it). I'm not married to this 12 hour window either. Always lots of good and bad ideas. The Pit Fights are a very old concept and requires me refactoring/rebuilding the entire battle engine like I wanted to do for the Kickstarter. It's not an insane amount of work, but I wonder if I could even get it all updated and working within a weekend...
