The game needs to playback in a modern browser (firefox/chrome) w/o additional plugins, and I think most of them have deprecated flash. :/

Actually, how is this working?
like, if your game draws graphics to a canvas and needs sprites or anything, it's gonna need to be hosted so it can load external resources

like, GM:Studio's HTML5 exporter is like $15 in the humble bundle right now, and it requires games to be hosted since it doesn't embed the resources in the game as data URIs

What in the hell? I don't know anything about the Gamemaker HTML output, but the browser can load assets locally using relative paths. As long as you don't start a path with / or http:// it works. Want a higher directory? You can lead with ../ to move up one. Same with going deeper: sprites/player/walking.gif

Personally, I'd feel pretty weird distributing a game that can't be played w/o internet even if it is browser based.

RPG Maker MV can export to HTML5 and puke7 said that's okay to use too. I hope this allows people to feel less intimidated about joining the game jam.

I guess I'm not using GM then.
Probably not an issue, could slam something neat up with three.js, and if I'm entirely honest, JS makes life easy enough that you really don't need most of the things GM provides.

@puke:
GM uses AJAX to load its resources, and by default, browsers don't allow AJAX requests to the local disk, even if it's just in the same folder or subfolder.

Savestate's answer fixes that -- but it's not something you'd suggest for distribution, it's strictly for dev purposes before you host it somewhere.
The game doesn't need to be on the internet to run, it just needs to not be seen as on the local machine by the browser.

admittedly, GM's HTML output was meant to put on actual sites -- you'd just provide a download for a native version for your OS if you intended to play offline

I hadn't considered the AJAX issue. It's true, AJAX is meant to hit servers and not file systems. To prevent cross site scripting, there needs to be a certain header in the response that says it's ok.

My best advice is to make a bare minimum project with your tool (GameMaker, RPG Maker, etc.) as soon as possible and test it running from a local drive.

BotB will only host .html and .zip files with forced donloads.

I'd be up for collabs, but u'll have to go into it knowing it's gonna be pretty jank and that you might not use your abilities to the extent you'd like considering my no-framework, vanilla JS philosophy.

This is mostly in regards to writing; I see no reason why creating music would be inhibited.

just a heads up, i'm not sure if this is unity only, or if this is a general thing. but apparently you need a 64-bit machine to build for webGL. i'm scrambling to get this spare 64-bit laptop ready in time since my principal computer is only 32-bit. :x learned this after i tried building in unity to test this stuff out to make sure i could even enter something and got an error.

btw i tested game maker and it works as just a exported .html in browser, but ti has an annoying popup that says "ooh you shouldnt play this natively blah blah" at the beginning lolrip (not actually a big deal tho)

I just did a test (not like I'm gonna submit or something...) of GameMaker and HTML5 local play...
Chrome doesn't seem to work, period. However, Firefox works with some caveats- You're not allowed to modify image data that exists outside of the scope of the site. What this means is certain things like changing the colors of graphics or blending pixels from runtime wont work. Here are some official details:

But TL;DR- Chrome just doesn't work. Firefox is maybe okay, depending on what you're doing??? My question is if that would be good enough for the requirements of submission, or should it be playable on any modern browser, not just Firefox in particular? (In the latter case, GameMaker would be DQ'd for use as an engine, and I'd assume a lot of engines like it would be as well...)

orion: I actually found out earlier today that local play with Game Maker does work with Chrome, but you have to enable file access when starting up Chrome.

chrome.exe -allow-file-access-from-files

^ typing that in cmd should do the trick. After that, you can drag and drop your index.html file into the new Chrome window and it should work. Problem is that you have to close all your other Chrome windows before doing this....

was gonna work on my other possibly for sale game project this evening, but oh well

pretty glad to know I can at least open GM:S games in FF -- if I had the whole 48 hours, I'd have done something mostly from scratch with three.js, but I really have more like 6 hours to make this :DDD

YouTube's 60fps seems to only work on higher quality settings (which, in my case, was 720p). You probably might've been watching it at 480p and lower which only goes up to 30fps (and lower if you go at lower resolutions)

what if the theme of every game jam is parallax??? every one... its like
game jam 2: the theme of this is cash.... (and parallax)
game jam 3: the theme of this is boons, dollas, cash, (and parallax)
game jame 4: the theme of this is NOT making a game (and including parallax)

parallax is good. parallax pants are good. one leg scrolls slower than the other

I just came here to say that I think this game jam was a great idea and I will definitely be participating in the next one! Playing these games made me feel more connected to the Botb community than I have in a long while. It feels like it really synthesized a lot of the elements that make up Botb. https://github.com/epistemex/8-bit - this html5 canvas library looks decent. Avoids the anti-aliasing which occurs when using the inbuilt canvas primitives like line, circle, rect. I think I will be using it on the next jam.

a suggestion
gm:s, unity and other stuff generate a really messed up, obfuscated .js files
for people who used those engines, why dont they make the source code (and assets) available somewhere?
that'd be pretty cool for ppl who want to learn more from those codez :D (such as me)

yeah, providing files for games would be really cool, maybe even a requirement for later game jams???

i were trying to implement a engine that moves the stars at various different speeds per layer along with the spaceship movement BUT i could not get it in time STILL; Blaze Weednix added a text file in the root folder called Parallax effect with just the stars mechanism, which i believe is the most polished effect in game lol, also; check out the html file in a text editor; i documented all the effects i worked on there, its also worth to look at the end of the file lol you may know when you see it

I know how eager y'all are to get your grubby fingers on the results, but the collaboration feature is coming along at a grinding pace. Because this feature will persist to all future Major Battles, I want to do this as right as possible. I've given up enough time and energy for the weekend on it already. I'm feeling really close, but there's some nasty stuff involved when I make missteps. If you are upset that results are another week away just tell yourself : "puke7 is a big dumb jerk and i hate this place"
