This compo is the best reason for me to even bother with MIDIs. For me, MIDIs are best for porting over to other platforms, not playing them in their original format (audio renders technically count, I suppose... but for me, I still don't care much for them).

So do we each choose an entry from any major (or OHB?) for each year to cover, or are they chosen for us?

How much creative license do we have when covering? Does it need to be really similar, or can we create something in a totally different style but just using some of the original material?

Quick question: Is it okay to tweak the song title a bit? Just so long as we link the original somewhere in the description, of course.

(Personally I think) Every entry should state the title, artist, and link to the original entry in the description (maybe state the year and what battle it featured in too, for bonus referencing value). I'm hoping titles are open tho. I think there should be a guideline in the rules on this.

I'd assume any degree of creative license is fine so long as the cover is recognizable as a derivative work in *some* way.

The plan so far : Before you get to the usual Submit Entry page, a BotBr first hits a form that asks for the entry_id of the song being covered and the format of the submission. My thinking was that the title would be "{BotBr}'s {title of original work}". Maybe that could be a suggested title and not locked in though with my original plan it would be obvious it's a cover and what it's a cover of.

The process of defining the entry being covered by it's entry_id will allow BotB to automajically link the two entries together on their pages.

As cool as the medley concept sounds; how about all BotBrs do the same thing by covering a single song per entry? :D/

I'm guessing we can only pick from one format for each year (as far as the entries to cover), and are those formats pre-defined? This is what I'm pondering right now...

I think what I meant is the source format, really (not so much the end result of our covers as far as formatting goes)... (if the answer's the same, then I have one I'm tempted to go for that covers the year 2013)

what i think would be best is if there was a tab on the track page that showed and linked to the covered tune. that way, we could have a bit more variety and room for cleverness in the titles. not sure how much work that would be though

oh hey! it's x e m o g a s a for a brand new tutorial on b o t b !!!!!
today we're gonna learn how to use gloggy-chan's soundclop (thx R3M for hosting) to search for one song per year for botb's new compo, BotB's Decadent Decade!!
first, go to gloggy's soundclop : http://botb.club/~golgi/soundclop/
see that blue wtfizer part? enter the following values for each year you want :
2005: min1-max83
2006: min84-max1035
2007: min1036-max1728
2008: min1729-max3060
2009: min3061-max4049
2010: min4050-max5599
2011: min5600-max7156
2012: min7157-max9790
2013: min9791-max13675
2014: min13676-max17747
now, click the wtf??? button for a random track! when you hear a track you like, click the blue number just above the wtfizer to open it in a new tab!
and that's it!! happy (sound)clopping!!!!

I am personally against covering your own tracks. If there is a consensus against this then I will honor that, but, really, how is that a cover?

Xemogasa, are these entry_id numbers you are showing using the BotB calendar year starting/ending May 11th?

I'm not going to cover one of my own songs (unless it's one of my entries where it didn't do so good in the first place). Plus... even if I were to do so, it would be a waste of a year anyways (my songs from earlier than the BOTB era are more interesting to me to remix, especially some material from the PS2... and some of them really do predate BOTB, actually).

In regards to the thing that Xemogasa posted, you can now access a super-summarized version of what he said on IRC! Just type in .botbdecade and you'll be given the link to the Soundclop as well as song ranges of each year for the wtfizer.

The catch? I have to be online for this to work. If you can't access .botbdecade, it's probably because I'm sleeping :o

my modus operandi for covering is probably gonna be taking the main melody of the song to be covered and using it as the motif, with the same sound design, but different pacing and chord choices

basically i wanna try to make it sound like a parallel universe version of the same song

To be totally frank, I'm probably going to ""cover"" one of my own songs regardless of whatever the official ruling is and let folks vote as they will, mostly because it's a convenient excuse to do something I've been wanting to do for a while. :P

I have other -real- covers to do though that I'm gonna focus on first, though, if that helps offset the jerkiness a bit. :P

I've got a curiosity about remixes...

Could you in theory do an original song but using only samples from the entry? Probably a bad idea, but that just ran through my head (it's the only valid case, though, in which an original song would be allowed if that's confirmed)...

This is because I've got one entry in particular where I'm tempted to have fun with the samples (and I might not end up covering the actual entry).

In other news...

These formats shouldn't be up on the submission list for the simple reason they don't cover music (unless someone wants to depict an entry in graphical form, I suppose... or it's some other way of expressing the entry):
- ascii
- Doom
- HTML/CSS
- HTML5
- pixel

The only other one that I'm a bit nervous about is audio sample, as that's usually used for sample submissions (example: Detroit), not so much music.

I think if it's a remix you can only sample the entry you are covering and, thusly, you more or less might as well conceive something new.

I have six covers planned. Two of them are released, with a third under production, and not a single one of them consists of any of my material. I'm also using different formats to account for duplicate formats not being allowed (at least in the conventional sense).

This is the first time since Versus Compo that I've ever felt right at home doing any sort of remixing whatsoever (in the old sense from when I knew it... from 2005.).

I've got a cover that, if I am successful, will be a duplicate format (I've replaced my original choice for this particular year because I have decided this one would be more interesting to try... this is because I noticed a direct correlation between that song and my own attempts from 2007-2008, so I'm going to see if I can pull off some insane feat instead.).

.botbdecade now has per-year parsing. Type in 2005 to 2014 (or 05 to 14 with or without a ' in front) and you'll get a random entry from that BotB year as well as a range to input to the wtfizer.

Wait, i'm confused. It says:
"10 'formats' this time - each is covering a BotB entry from a certain year in BotB's history"

So there are only 10 songs to choose from to cover? Or... just...vany song from the past 10 years? If it's the former, where is the list of songs? Or have i just been gone for too long and am totally missing something, haha?

replying to a previous comment, technically you can cover your own (there's no rule saying you can't and submission itself will (probably) work) but it may be frowned upon by some people, but that's probably up to voter's discretion.

some stuff written some comments above:
A-zu-ra: "can i cover one of my own songs _(:3 」∠ )_"
puke7: "I am personally against covering your own tracks. If there is a consensus against this then I will honor that, but, really, how is that a cover?"

but technically there isn't anything saying no so, if you really wish, go for it

I'm actually more interested in my pre-BOTB songs when it comes to doing self-covers. Especially my PS2 songs, given how I've grown to actually like some of my material despite my inexperience at the time (then again, there's also uninteresting material).

No, it's not.

Sure, it's a really long compo, but it's also commemorating 10 entire years of this site! What's a few months to a decade?

I don't really see a problem with it going on for a long time. There are still thousands of old entries that people can go back and look through, and there's no real need for it to be over at the moment.

i was ok with this getting its first extension "oh okay this is an important compo"

i was extremely annoyed this then got a two month extension and shafted summer chip and other compos in the process

and now it's getting another extention and i can't wait to find out what compos are gonna get shafted now

i'm sorry, but on a website for creating original music, i want to create and see what other people come up, not wait for a cover compo to hurry up and finish already

This compo isn't the reason for Summer Chip V's shortness, though...

Remember Spooky, Metal 3, and Doom ][? More than one compo can be going on at once. Summer Chip V was started late for other reasons, and if it were normal size, it'd have gone outside of summer.

Having won Metal 3 and entered Spooky, I do remember all three compos very well, nor are they by any means the first examples of multiple majors going on at once.

I accept puke had personal stuff to deal with. However, you cannot deny the correlation between Decadent Decade's two month entry extension and the normal monthly majors that would normally happen aside from Summer Chip not being on. That is why I am unhappy.

I want something fresh. I don't want to have to wait another two months (because there's a month of voting after, too!) for this bloody thing to end.

I like monthly majors as it encourages me to write a complete piece of music, it's fun, it's communal and I get to enjoy other musician's work. I don't get the same thrill from making a cover, or listening to covers.

If you want it to last an entire year, be my guest - but I know there are a fair chunk of unamused users unhappy with it getting yet another extension.

"nor are they by any means the first examples of multiple majors going on at once."
-Okay, but they are one example. Whether or not they're the first is irrelevant. My point was that having one going on doesn't guarantee that others won't be going on at the same time. Summer Chip was started late, but it still started in the middle of this one (and again, it was shortened due to it being a Summer competition, not due to any conflict with this one).

"you cannot deny the correlation between Decadent Decade's two month entry extension and the normal monthly majors that would normally happen aside from Summer Chip not being on."
-You're right, I can't deny the correlation. I can, however, suggest that it wasn't the cause. That's what the thread I linked was implying. It seems you believe otherwise though, and that's fine I guess.

We'll see whether or not more compos happen in the next few months; puke never said anything about halting future compos for this one. That's based on assumptions and your interpretation of why Summer Chip was the way it was.

And you're right about original compos having a very different feel from a cover compo! I totally understand the desire to have one of those, I'm not saying we don't need one.

Sorry for the wall of text and arguing, I really just want to suggest that this competition isn't something to get upset about. Although it doesn't really seem like this is going anywhere, so I guess I'll stop. I'm sorry about this.

This is a purely fictional issue. There's nothing stopping multiple compos from existing at once, and Puke's already posted that the reasons for Summer Chip being short were elsewise. This compo isn't blocking anything.

I may actually be able to contribute something this time, after lurking for so long!

The song I'm covering is barely recognizable anymore, though. I just took the vocal sample from the song and messed around with it. Even the sample doesn't sound much like in the original anymore, though. I hope that's OK.

QUESTION!

Please clarify: "a remix where you only sample the source material".

"Source material" meaning the original finished song, or the samples/sounds that made it?

Also, The remix I've uploaded contains samples from the original track with my own samples added. Am I right in assuming this is not allowed within the rules and I should make something new?

In this case it would be the original finished song, which makes this format for DD really weird to work with haha.

Format-wise, outside samples aren't allowed ... your assumption is correct sc.

Maybe you can try to replace the samps you used with cuts of the song if possible!

wut. How is it a "remix" if you can only sample the original song and "Every entry must be a cover". It's not a remix because it's a cover, so the only way to submit a remix within the rules is to download a song and re-upload it?

I could just re-upload my entry as allgear but since it's actually a remix I might be breaking the "must be a cover" rule?

the nature of the battle is that all entries are covers/remixes of previous entries! It doesn't have to be a 1:1 cover at all, in fact that's the most boring thing to do imo d:

Allgear for a "regular definition of remix" remix is totally fine!

The only way to submit under the "remix" category is to sample only the song you're remixing/covering and redo it using only sound cuts from the original song. It's not impossible to do it, it's just thinking outside the box enough is what it takes. DSPs and effects do help too!

Well, I have no additional covers to release. College work (and me getting distracted) put an end to that.

I never picked any songs from 2005-2006 and 2009-2010. I never started on my planned 2013-2014 cover (which was going to be a remix), and my 2011-2012 cover lays in an incomplete state (which was going to be a ZXBeep entry), abandoned since September 2015. I also have no plans for a 2015-2016 cover.

When I logged in today a message came up that said something like "You did not choose a correct entry submission noob". I clicked ok, it came up again and I clicked ok, then the site went to a blank white page.

I refreshed the page and it just went to the main Botb page. I looked at my recent entries and there are no comments. I really don't know of any incorrect submissions. Maybe this has something to do with what b00daw was saying?

i hope this isn't too late, but i'd like to petition against the "coverness" voting category. to accurately vote on an entry's coverness, you'd have to listen to both the cover and the original, which is daunting in a compo that already has 251 entries.

edit: i agree that something should be done about entries that bear no resemblance to the originals tho

Nevertheless, I still enjoyed at least making my covers, it finally got me into the swing of this crazy place, so... idunno, maybe break it up into sections based off of the BotB season if we ever do this kind of compo again.

Not everyone has time to listen to and vote for almost an entire 24 hours' worth of entries. This compo ended literally in the middle of finals season for practically every major education system in the United States it's not like people actually have time for all of this.

I'm simply saying the compo should not have been as extended as it was, because no one's going to feel like listening to that many entries. You could at least split the entries up results-wise, or something. I love the idea of Decadent Decade, though.

I think the actual listening time for all entries is about 6 hours? For me that was in the same ballpark as the time I spent making my entry.

If you don't consider voting a collateral part of the duty involved in submitting an entry, I would urge you to start. Factor this time in before you enter.

Otherwise you're just selfishly dumping your music on others and expecting them to evaluate it for you. Evaluation is a community effort, and if you want to be worthwhile you have to participate.

(Yes, it would have been nice if the voting period was a little longer on this one, but that's hardly the biggest problem here.)

Deathro, the reason the synclisten lasted nearly 24 hours was because I played both covers and originals, along with 15 minute breaks every hour and I read the descriptions + tags + gave tidbits of info about each song's background before / after playing them. Also playing songs for their entire render..... Even if it is just a 30 second loop that plays for 20 minutes hahahah.

The actual listening time for decadent entries was a fraction of the actual sync d:

School got in my way for this one, and though I probably could have listened and voted, it's harder (for me, anyway) to get really fired up about voting in a major when I don't have any entries in it.

But I totally love the idea of doing covers! I hope that this becomes a recurring (if rare) treat, so that I can take a crack at covering some of the BotB tunes that I've loved over the years.

Well, there were a lot of good songs/covers, too.

Of course, BotB being a non-profit entity, that doesn't mean it couldn't give out a bit more awards to these. Like for the formats' top 7, given out on seasonal major.

Fun or not, I can admit that I've wasted tons of effort on Amino Harm, and finishing all songs I write now is a handful. Plus, the scores on most of my entries make me feel like I fuck sucks and don't wanna return to making music anymore.

...although yeah, it wouldn't be for fun if I didn't join this, would it.

Also, thanks again Zlew.

I'm kind of late but I was wondering if, while pointing fingers about all this non-voting stuff, anyone ever questioned a few of the categories as well...

Meme tilt gave quite a boost to silly/joke entries in a lot of cases (I won't name any in particular) and Coverness (yes I'm going to complain about the one I got a medal in) was a bit of an issue because...

well, to some people, the only "good" cover is one that expands on the original, and yet some entries that added in a lot of originality suffered in this category.

Anyway, I'm not contesting the results; I just found those categories to be a little hard to vote on and I think they threw things off a bit.

+1 to what ktcmoop and sinc-x said

here's something i said elsewhere:

"i intended to vote and initially kept up with the synclisten, but i was stressed and had difficulty coming up with a sensible scheme for the voting categories. in college, i was always the last person in the class to complete instructor evaluations; i take things like this seriously and really dislike making judgments that seem arbitrary. in retrospect, monovoting would have been better than aborting completely."

I abandoned remixing a few years ago realizing I couldn't do the music justice. These days, I'm more likely to look for something bad rather than good... because for me, I sometimes find the good stuff to be untouchable by me these days.

crowdsourcing voting categories might not of been the best idea haha.
what about something like this:

you vote on what you think the entry's score should be, 1-7

then you have the option to vote on additional superlatives that don't affect placement / actual score but still used for medals. (all the janky voting categories we know and love)

that way, voting high on meme tilt (an arbitrary example) won't affect actual placement of the entry, but it can still get a meme-tilt medal for being voted most memey.

Entries are now ranked by how 'good' they are, and you can vote high / low on the additional categories w/o worrying about affecting their actual placement in the battle.

idk, just my two cents

savestate, i think this (good!) idea has been presented before! thought I think the overall scale should be more than 1-7 (maybe 1-35) since there's more of a difference between two entries that could theoretically be a 6 or something in a major compo

If you make the range too big, it gets hard for your brain to figure out the difference between two numbers on the scale. What's the difference between an entry that should get a 23, instead of a 24?

1-7 is a range that makes it easier to pick out the differences between each number on the scale.

How about you n00bz deal with how things are run around here and keep writing good music! B-knox has enough headaches jajaja!!!

If dead set on changing teh vote scheme why not just personally place the songs in the order you want to win? Instead of 5, 1-7 votes category's you just arrange all the songs. Such as a compo with 217 songs you would arrange them best to worst and that's your vote

That is a good solution for the current voting system Jangler. However, if the voting system gets changed in the future, having the categories mutually exclusive to the overall score might be something to consider implementing.

+1 to Savestate's suggestion.

I believe ludum dare does something similar to this. You have several categories for voting (i.e. music, graphics, etc), but in addition there's also a separate "overall" category. We can leave the current system with giving out top 7s for each individual category, while keeping the overall scores separate.

I have considered proposing the EXACT same idea. No big overhaul, just add a single new category called 'overall' and sort by that instead of the average.

Reminder that DONGS like to vote high for their faves rather than an entry that actually adhered to the theme well.

I like the category system for medals, but perhaps they should be more clearly defined. I wasn't able to get around to voting for all entries, but as I kept voting I thought more about the categories and what they actually meant to me. Different people might interpret categories in different ways, so it would be better if everyone had the same understanding of what is meant by "meme tilt" etc.

Here's what I ended up with, if anyone is interested:
Freshness - How much original content was brought into the track and how revitalised it sounded.
Meme tilt - How creatively the themes of the original track were modified.
Coverness - How close the new track sounds to the original.
Decadence - How extravagant the track was.
Extension in Pants - How much I personally enjoyed the track.

Alright, because of the way the cover submission was designed the database wasn't aware of all the formats involved in this battle. Consequently, the results by format were not visible which cascaded into their bonus points not being applied. It took some finagling, but I reversed the bonuses and reapplied the correct ones. We've already seen some level ups.

I'd like to apologize for the shortcomings of this battle's implementation. I meant to do quite a few things, but missed the mark. Had these points been included at the end of the Results Stream it would have been much less anticlimactic.
