So, most people have been getting annoyed at how I'm such a defeatist and always criticizing my entries and stuff, so instead of doing that, I'm now asking you all for help.

Comment away.

I guess carry on making. Take on board other people's cc, ask for cc, try out new things.. some of those new things may help to make music in a different way/style. Other formats may be easier than what you're used to now. Don't be afraid to take ages on just one song. Read the readmes of different trackers inside and out. Listen to works you admire. Look at source files to see how they do it. Don't see a >20 entry as a failure. Ask people for their very first chiptunes to see how clunky even the experts sounded. Also ask them how long they've been doing chiptune, it gives some perspective, as it's hard as a new chiptune writer to sound as good as someone who has 10 years of song making experience already in the bag. Ask people how they do certain effects if it isn't obvious. Consider, where possible in a song, using at a trick or effect you haven't used before.

Keep writing, familiarise yourself with your software/medium, listen to a lotta music and study it, inject passion, find your voice and know what it is

Creative things are hard. Not because actually -doing- them is difficult per se, but getting past the "i don't know what I'm doing" phase (even when you do) is super-difficult.

It's easy to say "keep writing," and that's really the only correct answer to any sort of "how do I get better?" inquiry, though the part that hasn't been brought up yet is the fact that -it's going to suck- for a while -- not the stuff you actually write, that is, but the process of doing so. You'll write some songs, maybe get some feedback here or there, but it'll suck -- that is, you'll feel unsatisfied for a while.

It's a hard truth, but they key point here is that -it's normal-. It's all too easy to translate "this sucks" with "i'm doing something wrong," and it's the latter road that leads to defeatist land. It'll take a while to click, but once you come to realize that it's not wrong to suck or to have a sucky time, you'll get over the hump. Until then (and after then, really), "keep writing" is the thing to do.

I dunno if that helps, but it's what worked for my own goofy self so it's worth bringing up, maybe-hopefully. Assuming any of this makes sense. :P

indulge your passion for creativity by doing what you can understand, and continue doing that and adding knowledge that you get from around, from books, from asking other people, until you are certain that you don't need anyone else to tell you how to do something, and instead you can tell yourself what you want to achieve, and then try your best at pursuing that goal.

In my experience studying and practice, in any field, is super helpful! Look up tutorials and pick apart the music files of your favorite songs. Really study what makes them so good to you, then take what you learned from it and put it into practice. Also ask for critiques, there is a lot you miss that others will pick up on.

Just jump into it. Record/find samples, try all the trackers, delve into some music theory, Make a song and use all the effects you don't understand, try creating your own instruments.

I think if you want to be better at making music, keep on trying to make music. If you have an FL studio 11, you can try to find a local person that has a similar interest to collaborate with. Collaboration is a really useful technique, especially if you have a group of people.

I'd learn how to make music, but I'm too lazy to learn it myself. Besides, Doom mapping is literally the only thing I'm good at.
