if you listen to your own song more than 5 times in the player, it autofaves.

also i think if you download it like 3 times or something.

Warheart, blue is a lovely color, and my favorite, in fact. However, Tails is from Brazil, so I figure a jungle scheme is pretty fitting. There's a lot of rainforests down in South America.

Yellow is lame, though. I don't know why that color exists anyway. ;-) jk

My what a sophisticated dialect. Hmmm. Tails, I think I can translate. He's saying that he cordially disagrees that yellow is gay, but that he thinks your music is awesome and appreciates your kind comments on his song... at least that's what I made up... maybe.... no....?

Well, actually, I wanted to ask if you happen to have the VSTi plugins, FMDrive, and Super PSG for when you do music in a DAW.

They are really nice to have for emulated Sega Genesis and Master system sounds. You can emulate the exact sounds with analog distortion in Musical Workstations like Pro Logic tools, Florida, Cubase, Jeskola Buzzmachines, and many others!

You can import .tfi plugins as well!

Hi Tails,

That's fine. I appreciate your honesty. I bought your album for $15.00 US, so it's your money to do with as you please. Take your friends or family out bowling or whatever you want... idk.

Here's a free VSTi solution that might work if you ever want to put Genesis sounds in OpenMPT for any reason:

http://gendev.spritesmind.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1062

Links are there, and the very last post on the 5th page of the thread has this link:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZebPga_jNc

This will teach you basics on how to use this VSTi called "GENNY", and how to turn what you make with it into an actual .vgm file! Which I didn't realize you could do with it.

It also has the PSG integrated into it, which I also was unaware of until now.

Now, about Tiido's progress, he seems very busy and reclusive these days... we are 10 hours apart, and I am also reclusive and busy :p

Last I heard, he was working on programming the SSG-EG effects, and still needs to implement the AMS LFO settings, if I'm not mistaken.

He's got everything else implemented including effects parameters, basic vibrato, pitchbend, etc. Not to mention the sweet multitracking DAC channel feature. The interface will be friendlier than Deflemask, and you shall see why whenever you start tracking with it.

I'll try to get ahold of him at some point to say hi, and see where he's at. This is his web server page: http://www.tmeeco.eu/

Which is down at the moment... I hope he's OK :'(

Tiido, does not have a blog or update page that gives status on his tracker, that I know of.

I'll let you know first when it's released, and I'll make a post on Botbs on Tiido's behalf.

Man... thank you :D a lot! I don't really know what to say... Well, I guess I'll stick with the simple and traditional thanks. Thanks! :D

About Genny, it seems pretty nice, I just gotta need to figure out how to use custom PCM samples, log VGM and to the whole song with a single instance of the plugin, if I'm able to do those I think I'd be able to do VGM songs only with OpenMPT! And since it's the tracker I'm most used to, that'd be awesome, haha! Thanks for that too!

I hope too everything's ok with Tiido, he seems to be a cool guy. And I'm looking forward to his tracker too, it really seems it's gonna be pretty good!

Again, thanks for all! :D

About Genny and OpenMPT:
I was able to create multiple instruments with a single instance of Genny, thus I was able to create a song that WOULD work on a real Sega Genesis. However, most effects don't work with Genny (and that's OpenMPT's fault for not having a very good MIDI/VSTi implementation, I THINK (someone, correct me if I'm wrong)). However, SCx (note cut) and SDx (note delay) work correctly, and with those I was able to create something
. (the .it
file, if you want it.)

However, everytime I close and reopen MPT, I have to reset the instruments BEFORE playing the songs because else Genny won't work (it will look like it has thousands of the same instrument). That, also, would be OpenMPT's fault for not being able to save Genny's configuration within the .it file correctly(once again, I'm not sure). But that's not a big hassle since all the instruments are presets, the only ones I'd actually have to re-do are the PSG ones and they aren't really complex.

About .vgm logging... Well, see
(or rather, hear) for yourself... I was able to log the vgm file, but it doesn't work on Chipamp, this mp3 was converted with foobar2000 (and it sounds almost the same on in_vgm, except a bit louder). I suppose I could fix that, though, I just gotta watch that vgm logging tutorial you linked (fully), which I have no time to do right now (in fact I was supposed to be doing college stuff, but I am kinda quick to do those so don't mind lol).
Oh and if you want the .vgm file for some reason, here
it is haha

Genny seems more suited for DAWs rather than OpenMPT, and I don't really am the biggest fan of DAWs (probably that's because I don't have a MIDI controller, and because I'm REALLY used to trackers in general). If I could find a decent MIDI tracker (reminder that OpenMPT's MIDI export SUCKS so it doesn't count), I could probably use a MID2VGM converter (like DalekSam does) or Genny's VGM logger, whatever seems more efficient. But if the people behind OpenMPT make effects work correctly with MIDI stuff, then I guess there won't be any problems on using Genny with OpenMPT.

Once again, thank you c:
(wow, this is a long text! hahaha)

Hola Tails,

You are certainly welcome! ^_^

Cool, you're a college guy now! What do you think you will major in? I hope I don't distract you too much from your studies, but I wanted to answer your last post.

Wow! That tune sounds fantastic! I'm impressed with what you were able to pull off without using portamento. The VGM file has this scratchy high pitch noise consistent through the song compared to the .it file.

GENNY is a buggy program and it's still a work in progress.

I tested out FM Drive using OpenMPT, and it sounds great, but you can't get get portamento from that either. Actually, that's probably FM Drive's issue, because Aly James is still working out the bugs in non-retriggering portamento. He says he worked out the bug, and should be releasing it in a future version... probably after he's finished up with his Linn Drums plugin.

Yeah, that is a bummer. Portamento is an extremely important feature that allows for all kinds of cool envelope morphing effects and other things. It is vital in Ocean Melody, and many of my other songs.

FMDrive's vibrato effects, and such are built into the VST, and have their own MIDI CC's and such (I think), and you can also do asymetrical vibrato for cool electric guitar effects. Tim Follins did this for the electric guitar on Time Trax using software modulation. There's LFO stuff you can do with FM Drive that you can't do in VGMM, and it would actually work on Hardware.

I will do more testing with a couple of other trackers when I have time, and give you an update.

By the way, have you heard of Jeskola Buzzmachines by any chance?

It's a really cool Modular DAW with a tracker interface. It is jam packed loaded with free instruments and effects, and has pretty rich VSTi 2.0 support. You enter in everything like in a tracker, and there's definitely a learning curve. I will do some testing with that to see if there's any more success.

I'll also test out some thing with GENNY using Madtracker.

I was hoping there was a way to get you an "all in one" setup with OpenMPT, but we are hitting a few snags, no? I think this all should be fixed with the next version of FM Drive which should have VGM logging, non-retriggering portamento, and a whole ton of other very advanced features. It should take full advantage of all those hidden features of YM2612.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Now, in terms of Tiido, I have tried to get ahold of him, and he has not yet responded. I asked him a bunch of stuff on your behalf, including your question about loading samples into other FM channels like in Adlib (no I haven't forgotten, just been busy as always).

I found a link that shows a couple of pictures of his "Vanilla Megadrive" tracker, and you'll find some of his music on that same site.

https://ucollective.org/profile/TmEE/

Scroll down the page a little, and you'll see them, including a picture of Tiido himself. I am getting a little worried about him by now. I know there is a bunch of mess going on in the Ukraine because of Russia, but Tiido lives in Estonia which is protected by the US.

---------------------------------------------------------------

This is a long text, too! I can help you make this the most obnoxiously long profile page on Botbs. The scroll bar will be meaningless HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! >:D Or, I could just post text file links, because I ramble a lot about technical things.

Before I wrap up this message, here's a link to something I made with just Super PSG from Aly James:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2C16041iMhgMTBZSW8xOWdFbEk/edit?usp=sharing

I made it in Jeskola Buzzmachines.
This can technically be logged to a VGM file and run on hardware, and yes, it would have those Commodore 64 sounds, only running off of a Genesis instead. The 3 PSG channels are used only. 4-bit PCM through channel 1, bassline through channel 2, arps and lead on channel 3. You could not run a game and have the PSG sounding like this at the same time... too much processing for the video H Blank timers, and CPU.

Don't worry, you're not distracting me from my studies haha in fact I'm pretty able to do so myself.

Thanks! I just tried with other VSTis here and the portamento issue is OpenMPT's - about the GENNY plugin going nuts when reloading the .it file, that's GENNY's fault I guess.

I've downloaded both Buzz and Madtracker to see if this issue would be fixed - no for Madtracker, and I wasn't able to understand how to put VSTis on Buzz, which is probably quite simple, but anyway, I will try that later. Well, I think I probably should make a post on OpenMPT's forum about those issues with tracker effects and MIDI...stuff (the same effects that don't work with MPT's MIDI export are the same that don't work with VSTis, I've just checked that too). That's probably the most effective way of getting an "all-in-one" setup, as you said.

About Tiido's tracker, it seems pretty nice so far! It doesn't look like it takes long to understand how it works and such. I don't really like how it looks like a DOS program though, but that's not an issue at all.

And about your Super PSG thing... Well, it is "Super" indeed haha it kinda sounds like the AY/YM chips, except for the 4-bit PCM on channel 1... I had no idea that either of these was possible hahaha
Your tune is simple but it's very good! Good job C:

Well, there are reeeeeeeeeally long profile pages out there, but most of them have mostly short messages. Maybe we can get to make the longest profile that has mostly LONG stuff? Hahaha

Hi Tails,

Alright, here is my Jeskola Buzzmachines installation:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2C16041iMhgQ1I2MTRnMTlUaFk/edit?usp=sharing

VSTi is all set up, and all you need to do is scroll down the menu in the right hand side, then drag and drop the "GENNY" plugin to the main module screen. The next step is to hold down the SHIFT key, click the GENNY box, and drag the arrow that pops out of machine into the Master box. This is how all machines are setup in Buzz.

Master = speakers/out/tempo/master volume/

Every machine has to eventually output to the master. You can drag an effects vsti into the main screen, then connect GENNY or other instruments to that effect. Then connect that effect into the Master box. The connections are quite visual which is kind of nice, I think.

I tested out the MIDI controls and everything I could find pertaining to portamento, but no success. :'(

The howdo.txt file for GENNY does say this:

Midi Automation
================
COMING SOON!

I think this may explain the trouble. Looks like GENNY might not be in tune with MIDI control just yet. FM Drive -IS- , but still waiting on the non-retriggering portamento. There are gliding features, but they reset the envelope before sliding up or down to the new notes. It can make for some interesting effects, but not quite what we're looking for (I don't think).

It sounds like a good idea to make that post on OpenMPT's forum. Perhaps this might fix at least some things, idk.

Stay tuned to my Google + account, as I will be trying to record mini tutorials on questions I'm asked, software I use, and new things I learn.

I'll be making one on behalf of Leila Wilson, a really excellent videogame musician who I've been communicating with. She was asking me how to import .tfi files, so I thought I'd make a little desktop tutorial video showing how to do that.

This method will be quicker for me for answering questions, and showing people visually, instead of having to type long, obnoxious rambling posts... but there's nothing wrong with that, right? ;)

Leila likes your music (I told her about your music, btw), and I think you would enjoy her tracks. Here's her Soundcloud page: https://soundcloud.com/leila-wilson-woofle

She is most talented indeed!

Well, perhaps when OpenMPT, FM Drive, and GENNY are updated, our problems will be resolved. I'll keep playing around with stuff to find solutions in the meantime... maybe I'm missing something, and I don't have a lot of time for deep exhaustive research.

Tiido's tracker... yeah, it looks waaaay better than the DOS version he had from years ago (he showed me pictures). It may look like a DOS program, but the resolution matches Windows, and the interface will be fast (although mainly keyboard controlled). I hope I haven't said too much.

For the Super PSG song, Sega Master System, Genesis, etc., can all play the "buzzers" that everyone is familiar with in the AY/YM chips. Aly James said that it's a similar programming method as getting the PCM and PWM samples to work on it. They are legitimate sounds from the SN76489, and will work on unmodified hardware... of course you'll be lucky to get Tic Tac Toe to run with that kind of audio abuse going on!

When Aly James gets the VGM logging going, there's gonna be some seriously crazy SMS files submitted to Botbs. People will be crying foul, which is what I want! ;-P

Hope I haven't forgotten anything.

I just posted something on http://bugs.openmpt.org/, hoping they take a look at it. Seems like they usually do.

Also, I subscribed to your YouTube account (I do not follow on G+ because it usually fills my notifications with A LOT of stuff, and I like to keep it for personal stuff (comments on my vids, replies, etc.))

Your tutorial seemed a bit too long for something that simple, but it was pretty complete and understandable, so umm nice job! :D

And thanks for showing my stuff to her, her songs are pretty cool! I'm listening to them right now, and they're really pleasant! Even though I followed her on SC and left a comment, feel free to tell her I liked her songs haha =D

This is a relatively short reply considering the amount of subjects you've brought up but that's because I just arrived from college and it's 1 AM here and I'm kinda sleepy *yawns* but anyway

A last question, will Tiido's tracker have the same features as the Super PSG? Even though we don't really need the 4-bit PCM since we already have the sixth channel on YM2612 for that, but still, these C64 notes seem real interesting to use on a SGEN tune =o

(Also feel free to continue with the "obnoxiously" long posts, I don't mind actually haha I like them tbh)

See ya!

Just a quick (not really) update here, Tiido is alive and recovering from a serious back injury. He says it should not take much longer, but this explains why I haven't seen activity from him for awhile.

Still, I'm very happy he's OK! I was praying for him.

Also, the tracker he's making seems to only support normal Square wave PSG output at this time. Tiido's intent is for efficient sound processing with actual games. He's able to make it work with Multi DAC sampling, but the PSG H Blanking trick is waaaay too intense for supporting gameplay. The sound is using up most of the video resources at that point. I don't know if he will support PCM and PWM output through the PSG, but the Multi DAC as you said should suffice.

Here's a couple of songs he made with his PSG portion:

https://soundcloud.com/tiido/time-goes-by

https://soundcloud.com/tiido/psg-tune-please-read

He won a contest with "Time Goes By". See this link:
http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14695

It will still be a very high quality tracker, and the best choice if you want your music playing in an actual Genesis game. I read a comment from him that said "I do not have VGM output for my tracker yet". What that tells me is that he probably will implement that at some point. Now, if he still allows for some other kind of data or ROM output, that could still mean we could enter one of his modules in Botbs... idk, I'll have to duke it out with puke 7, and see what he says when the time comes.

Also, I posted this on Soundcloud recently: https://soundcloud.com/marcb0t/bossa-nova-experiment-fm-drive-super-psg

It's all your fault, Tails! You got that Panda Tracker tune stuck in my head, and I had to make a Samba/Bossa Nova sounding tune!

I made it using FM Drive and Super PSG ONLY! I used the VSTi's in Jeskola Buzzmachines, and did some live MIDI play for the PSG chords and Vibraphone (Something Leila Woofle inspired me to do). All these sounds are possible on Genesis as well, all playing together in beautiful polyphony. ^o^

Of course I used the H Blank technique for the PSG, and also modulated the waveform output of the H Blank (another cool trick you can do). It basically gets you sounds near to that of Turbo Grafx 16, or some bell like sounds from the FM chip. There is a hidden power in that PSG chip.

Because I posted that song, Aly James commented on it. He mentioned that he has not forgotten about the non-retriggering Portamento feature for FM Drive, and will be getting around to getting that in his next version! This is something that will work in Buzzmachines, as there is pretty full on MIDI support for tracking.

Oh, yeah, everyone should stop haten' up on the haeit. I wish I had a "haeit 'em all" plugin for FireFox so that I could haeit all of Golden Denis's comments with one click of the button! Hey, I'm into efficiency after all. :)

Oh, good to see Tiido is fine! I was kinda worried about him as well! Just today I mentioned his tracker to an irl friend, even though it wasn't something very detailed.

About his tracker, well as you said Multi DAC should suffice. I wonder what someone like Strobe will do with it, since he likes to abuse PCM in his sgen tracks. I don't really like his songs, but it's an undeniable fact his skills with chips and stuff are stunning.

Listened to his stuff. They are nice, even though I'm not the biggest fan of the PSG chip. Its limitations are a bit annoying to deal with. But hey, did you know you can make C64 percussions on it? And it would be gameplay-friendly, since it doesn't use that H blanking trick, nor it's PWM or PCM. If you wanna listen to something I made using that technique, here it is
(it's from Dec/13 if I'm not mistaken)
If you want it there's also a .vgm
and a .dmf
file, if you want to see how I did that, but it's something quite simple, I'm pretty sure you'd figure it out by yourself ;)

I heard your bossa tune, and it's very nice and pleasant sounding, however the liveplay on the lead could be better executed - it's not bad, specially for a first try, but it's offtiming at times and some of the notes don't seem to be coherent. But nice job, anyways, I could try that anytime.

And nice to see that portamento will work in Buzzmachine haha it's gonna be pretty convenient I guess/hope... And about better VSTi integration with OpenMPT, forget about it, "there is no sane way of emulating Gxx the same way it works for modules" - Saga Musix himself, and the same applies to other effects. And that's a 'no' to good MIDI Export feature as well. Well, maybe that's a good excuse for me to learn how to use a DAW I guess. Also, does Buzz exports as MIDI? Haha

Also, check out my Deflemask tune for ST3(I posted it on Soundcloud as well but listening through BotB will give me chipist points and I want some haha). I think it reminds Tim Follin's Ghouls 'n' Ghosts OST
(at least that was the style I tried to follow), but some other people says it reminds Alberto J. Gonzales' tunes
(specially The Smurfs OST for NES/GB, even though I didn't really pick the best example of that resemblance I guess) or Russian Folk songs (like the Tetris theme
, I guess). I showed it to some irl friends, and they seemed to like it a lot.
There's also my mixbattle_art entry, that is my best / only serious attempt at pixel art, and I'm proud of the result, even though it isn't anything that special.

Hi Tails,

Wooo! I got a little time for once. Been working late into the

night, sleepin' 3 hours, and then working an early morning shift.

Fun stuff!

1. Heard your C64 percussion, and this will help me as I actually

wanted to do drums like that on the SN76489 (Is there a simpler

name for that thing out there?). I would interchange between

those and the Periodic noise on PSG as it would give it this

EDM/Techno-e sound... or a little Reggae mon if you slow eeet

down. Thank you for that.Sounds good!

2. Bossa Nova tune: Yeah, I totally agree. It's off, and the

melody doesn't quite fit the chord progression at some parts, but

that's why it's I call it an experiement. Now if I can figure out

how to use the quantizer, then I can get it to at least match the

rythym. Then I have to practice my improvisation skills. Leila

Wilson Woofle does this, and is very practiced with it.

Also, this would allow me to make complex tunes and melodies

quickly, and then convert it over to game data, bypassing all the

extra work of traditional trackers... However, it is fun to

strain at those intricate vibrato and portamento settings... so

maybe not all the time. :( It took me probably about 1 hour to

make that tune. It would normally take me much longer using all

tracking.

3. Buzzmachines/MIDI - Yes, Buzzmachines is capable of importing

and exporting to MIDI, howeeeeeever... I can't set it to export

beyond 16 PPQ (Parts per Quarter Note) which means you won't get

as human of a sound from it. However, it might not be a big deal.

You can always use the program REAPER to convert the MIDI file to

sample rate PPQ (beyond 44,100 Hz)! No other DAW can do that.

I'll explain more about that at some other time, but just know

this will make those commodore sounds possible on VGM files now!

You have to make sure your MIDI file is converted to 16 PPQ as

well before importing it into Buzzmachines. I'll have to look

into how I can change it, because it is annoying and archaic.

Yes the pitchbending and gliding already works, but portamento is

the effect we are shooting for. (There is a difference between

all 3 of these effects). This is because buzzmachines allows you

to track tweaks to all those MIDI parameters much like you can do

with OpenMPT effects.

As a matter of fact, I've never seen such good MIDI support like

FM Drive has!

I saw the response from Saga Musix the other day. What a bummer!

Well, it's not the end of the world. OpenMPT is good for some

things, Buzzmachines is good for others. Doesn't look like an

"all in one" app is in store anytime soon, but I'll keep looking.

DAW's are fine and all, but I think Buzzmachines is like the best

of both worlds... You can download VSTi's that you can make

custom waveforms with like in Open MPT, and use them in

Buzzmachines. I would show how to use Buzz and these features in

future videos. You end up switching between MIDI presets instead

of instruments.

I was showing off your Russian Folk tune to my little brother,

and he was impressed... and it takes a lot to really impress him.

It sounded like cartoon music more than video game music which is

really impressive for a 1983 sound chip. Love those flute sounds

you seem to find. I still have this tune stuck in my head.

Your music may not last for 7 minutes a song, but that really

doesn't matter. A good melody can be a few seconds, and leave a

lasting impact. Most chip music from ancient times is under a

minute, and looped. The Zelda tune is really short, yet is one of

the most well loved and known tunes of all time. The same for

Super Mario. I saw a 36 year old man in a bed store nicely

dressed answer his phone. The phone ring was Super Mario 1

Overworld! :)

Check out this weird effect I made in Deflemask:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2C16041iMhgdnVlYkF5Y1dIVFk/edit?usp=sharing

Basically, when I combine Periodic melodic noise with all 3 other

channels (something that's not supposed to work), and set it to

the lowest octave for channel 3 sqare, the square wave will

actually play, and match the note of the noise channel. The

square tone is 1 or 2 octaves higher than the noise, and it

sounds like the square is pinched... like someone stuck a

"highpass" filter... except there was no highpass filter inside

the SN76489!

I thought it was a bug in Deflemask, but the vgm file plays the

same from VGMPlay... weird! Check it out:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2C16041iMhgVGlDR3dQemhVR3M/edit?usp=sharing

I want to have Tiido (when he is feeling better) run it off real

hardware to see if this is a new strange sound we can use without

any H Blank abuse.

See if you can do some cool stuff with this weird effect. You can increase and decrease the octaves of the same note in the 2 other PSG channels and get some interesting results as well. You have to have the notes in both channels 3 and 4, but you can mute channel 4 and still get this weird highpass effect with the square tones.

Have fun!

Wow, quite a busy life you have haha you must be real tired with stuff D:
1. Thanks! Also, you could call the SN76489, idk if it's a right term or not, but I'd be able to understand it, so why not c:

2. Right now I'm really used to trackers and I can track pretty fast in those (just check some of my OHB works, there are people who do it faster but anyways), but I do agree that playing it live is even faster - an example would be this song by Virt
that is about 4:30 long and was made in 55 minutes. Really cool stuff!

3. Well, that is nice! For doing that kinda PSG drums, I'd still prefer Deflemask, but very good to see I have a nice option to do sgen stuff while Tiido's tracker doesn't come out! Also I don't think you'd need a VSTi to do custom waveforms, you could do those on OpenMPT and export the sample as .wav - it probably would be more convenient and use less RAM, and I'm pretty sure Buzz can read the .wavs and their loop points perfectly. And, don't worry about an all-in-one setup, we have quite a few good methods of making sgen songs already haha (Deflemask (its 'random crash' bug has been fixed!), VGM_MM, DAWs/buzz + FM Drive/Super PSG/Genny and soon enough Tiido's tracker!)

(About my SID tune) Haha thanks! Also this flute sound is nothing but a triangle waveform with a quick fade-in (the delay had no fade-in, though, due to one of SID's limitations (the instrument volume being set by ASDR and the only other volume control besides that being global))
And thanks! I have some kinda ease to make melodies - as in, I know what sounds coherent and what not, my problems would be with making long stuff without sounding repetitive and using not-that-generic chord progressions (I believe I succeeded on that on "la bruja mala" haha) but anyways, one step at a time, right? ;)

Anyways, that might be a nice thing you found in the PSG chip! But I have no idea on how I'd use that on a song, haha, but who knows, I gotta play with that sometime. Thanks for sharing that with me, though!

Also there is a nice website called Hooktheory - it's for teaching music theory and it's paid, but they have a free feature called Hookpad - with that, you can make your own stuff quickly, on the internet, and even export a .mid file to edit it on your favorite software and stuff! (I have no idea if that .mid file is 16 PPQ though) You could use it when you have free time but it's not much, to make doodles and stuff.
The link to that tool (be sure to create an account beforehand): http://www.hooktheory.com/hookpad/new
The manual: http://www.hooktheory.com/hookpad/docs
Some stuff I covered with it:
happy summer tune
by me (choose '( ) Piano')
=(
also by me
ice cream orchards by goluigi and Interrobang Pie
(WIP, may have some inaccurate chords)
Huseffekten by Lukas Eriksson
(original song here, listen to it, it's REALLY GOOD)(also WIP, has one wrong chord because hookpad doesn't still support key changes, but you can borrow chords from other modes (major, minor, etc) so I could replicate most of them accurately)
Close Encounter by Cerror
(also WIP)
It's a simple and pretty fun tool, even though it's limited, but as I said, it's mostly for doodling.

Thanks for all, and see ya!
(Btw, I saw you uploaded the tracker view of Ocean Melody! Cool :D as I expected, it looks and sounds neat on YouTube!)

Hi Tails,

Alrighty, where to begin:

1. As you know, I started a little collab project with Woofleila, and you are able to see the progress we're making through that directory I shared with you. I gave her an old Work in Progress Deflemask song of mine. Here is the dmf if you want: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2C16041iMhgM0xXT3RZTXJBcHc/edit?usp=sharing

she was wanting to make a Sonic CD style song where we have a "Past", "Present", Good and Bad Future Mix. My Deflemask song serves as the "Past" mix. Woofle then made a "Present" arrangement, and then I made a prototype for a Good Future mix on Monday, which was a holiday for me. I had some rare time to flex my musical muscles, and had a lot of fun.

You are welcome to add to the dmf, or integrate some of the melodies or instruments in your own work.

2. On that note, I've been finding out how to make authentic Sonic CD Past music. The Past tracks were not CD audio, but instead used the Ricoh PCM chip inside the Sega CD. It used 8 channels of 8-bit PCM samples, with a maximum rate of 32KHz. All FMV sound was actually fed through the PCM chip and was mono.

I've discovered that you can use a MOD style tracker to use the original samples used from the game, and convert that to a compatible file that will run off a real Sega CD!

It would be cool if you could come up with some MOD/PCM style original Past arrangements. This is the most important part as the Past music is foundational for the present and future mixes. You have a lot of original catchy melodies, and that is what is needed for Past music, along with your MOD tracking skills.

One thing, it has to be a .MOD file specifically. Open MPT can export to .MOD, right? Not my normal thing to deal with.

Guess what? Sega CD PCM .BIN files were not supposed to be more than 64KB total for one track (like SNES?). Anything over, and the system would clip off data from the longest sample, until it got back down to 64KB.

I will try to sort out the .BIN files from the game so you can have individual samples to work with from all the zones. We could even make original samples with that same wonderful Lo-Fi distortion!

There's no rush or anything. It's just a fun side project up for grabs that we can do in our own time.

3. I checked out Hook Theory, and your songs. Wow, they are pretty impressive and complex on some. I like them a lot. Your happy Summer tune is the best! I love it... Could we use that as "Past" arrangement music for a made up Sonic CD Zone? Sounds great for that.

I may look into to using Hook Theory sometime. I've been playing around with Pixitracker on my smartphone, but unfortunately, there is no MIDI export. :(

The good thing is that it's incredibly quick to jot down cool music ideas. I could even import the Sonic CD Past sample files into it to jot my own past ideas quickly and hear them right away on the road! It's a very easy tracker to use, so it's helpful for when I'm on Lunch break and need to get an idea down quickly. Wave export is possible, and there' s a Windows version.

Well, I'll catch ya later, just wanted to give you a quick update on some things.

Yes, the Ocean Melody video looks and sounds great on YouTube. I am considering doing a Past/Present/Future mix for that as well! I would call the zone "Serenity Seaside".

Tsee ya!

Wow, you really seem to be into those Sonic CD past/present/future stuff now haha

1. I was gonna check this before (I think I had access to this folder, didn't I?) but I forgot. Will check as soon as I wake up tomorrow (If i remember, I hope I do). If when I check it I have an idea, I'll add it - but I will make a backup of it, of course.

2. Wow - that's REALLY interesting :D MOD usually have the 4 chnls restrictions but you can use more channels with OpenMPT. And I'm a bit used to the 64kb limit, but in SNES the samples were compressed so I could go a bit farther than that. But does such a converter exist? I never heard about it. And can the .MOD file have 8 chnls or must it be standard 4 chnls only? Either way, it seems REALLY interesting =o

3. Thanks haha, all of those are cover from BotB songs (except Cerror's), and yes you can use it haha some people even say it resembles Door into SUMMER from Knuckles Chaotix... Sounds like an obvious inspiration (since, well, summer and stuff), but it wasn't - the summer-themed title and song was because of the compo (Summer Chip III), but anyways, I agree it'd fit on a Past arrangement haha
I don't really understand much about Sonic CD OSTs though
I've already used PixiTracker a few times, problem is I'm not good at all at doing stuff on my phone so rip =( also I have some portable trackers on my pendrive so incase I wanna do literally anything at college (mainly jot down ideas quickly), I can - that is, if I have a computer nearby. Most classes uses computer though.

It'd be fun to do some projects with ya! I will look further into that tomorrow - unless I forget or wake up really late (like 1 PM or something idk)(it's 1 AM here right now)... Well, I think I'm going to sleep, I don't know what else can I do and I'm kinda sleepy, so c-ya ;p

I got your Soundcloud PM. All I can say about that is total coolness!

Leila Wilson threw out the idea of composing a Sonic CD style time travel arrangement, and then we just started going for it. It's been quite fun seeing someone else transform your own work into something that really shines.

1. I whipped up something cool this afternoon when I had time. Check it out: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2C16041iMhgQzFkTEVOWmEtclU/edit?usp=sharing

The .it file is in the Collab folder I recently shared with ya. It's inside the directory called "Seaside Serenity". If Ocean Melody had a "Past" arrangement on Sonic CD, I imagined it sounding like this.

I actually ripped all the samples from Palm Tree Panic Past game data, and used those to compose a remix of Ocean Melody using the Palmtree Panic style.

The .it file contains every musical sample used in that zone for the PAST.

If you are willing, I'd like you to fine tune it and add to it what you think should be there. Thought you'd have fun with that. You essentially would be making authentic sounding Sega CD PCM music within those 8 channels!

2. Yes, 4, 6, and 8 channels are supported in this MOD2SEGACD conversion process. Here's more info from Chilly Willy's posts:

I haven't gotten that far with it yet, only with using the game samples to make music. I did not use any effects, and all the samples remain at 16KHz to maintain integrity... I looped a couple of samples though (drumloop and sine wave sound only).

3. Knuckles Chaotix... yes I remember that tune very well. Actually, part of Ocean Melody is inspired by the Marina Madness song, and uses instruments from different parts of the game.

Your Summer song sounds totally unique, but I can see the chipper style resembles Knuckles Chaotix tune very slightly. I never would have known if I wouldn't have seen the name, though.

Having a song called =( is very cool, by the way. It sounds kind of medieval in a sense.

I'll have to upload some of my recent Pixi Tracker tunes when I make more progress on them.

You can add the Buzzmachines installation I gave you to your Pendrive. It runs portably! I used to use it at the local library right off my own USB drive.

OK, that's all for now.

Later!

1. Wow, this sounds lovely =o there's only a few notes that bother me, but I'll correct them c: Anyway, pretty nice job!

2. Nice! Seems a bit complex, but I'm pretty sure I'll figure it out eventually.

3. Yeah, Knuckles Chaotix is full of GREAT tunes! My favorite one from it is Midnight Greenhouse
. Also the 32x has this PWM... 'thing' (???) which supports 4 PCM samples. I which there was any way to so stuff for it, but so far I haven't found nothing. But that's mostly because I didn't search for it, haha.
Also '=(' sounding medieval? Haha, that sounds a bit odd for me, but thanks, I guess :P

About Pixitracker tunes, well, I believe Summer Chip III is nearby, if you wish, you can upload a Pixitracker tune to the Wildchip category! Although something made in another software with more resources would end up sounding better and probably would be nicer to work with. Also there's probably gonna be a Sega Genesis category as well! It'd be pretty nice if you joined :D that is, if you have time!

Also, talking about the wildchip category once again, since we're seeing how Sega CD stuff works, another nice idea would be to upload a Sega CD song to wildchip! I'd prefer with a working vgm or rom or whatever file, but since it's wildchip it's not necessary haha only the mp3 would be necessary (but uploading source files to wildchip isn't a bad idea, as every other format you could upload the mp3 later and nobody would bother)(also who doesn't likes source files? ;))

Right now I'm editing your .it file a bit! When I'm done, I'm gonna send it via Soundcloud PM, ok? (Edit: just sent!)
C-ya :P

Oh, bummer! I can't download the file. It tells me it's been deleted or removed. =( Maybe accident?

Would love to hear what you did though.

PWM for 32X, yeah, I've heard some similar things like actually more than just 4 PCM channels for it, but they normally seemed to use it for voices and drums... although Star Wars arcade had a recorded PCM of the movie theme at the beginning.

I'm sure there is or will be a way to mess around with PWM on 32X. They already have it emulated so that's a good sign.

It would be neat if because of our musical development with this, if Sega CD PCM became a category like Mario Paint is. After all, Sega CD is basically another MOD/SNES style of making music.

Or, if nothing else, make Sega CD PCM music with the SNES chip, since it's basically the same at its core. Just don't use the DSP effects, and there ya go!

About entering an SGEN category for the Summer Chip, idk... maaaaaybe if I finish a couple of projects, I can finish up "Lunar Light Zone" past arrangement. What would be an interesting bend of rules would be to see if I can enter the "Present", and "Future" arrangements of it in an "All Gear" category. I know covers are not allowed, but in another sense, it's not fare to call them "covers". They are different songs with similar melodic and bassline progressions. But they are still different and serve a separate purpose for each.

Palmtree Panic Past is ONLY for when Sonic travels to the past in that zone, and so forth. The Present is not a cover of that, though the melody is very much the same, it's a different song ONLY for the Present, and so forth. The Bad future is adequately deviated enough from the PAST melody for sure.

A real cover would be if I pretty much copied my SGEN version in a professional tracker note for note, and made it sound like a Big Band from the 40's. (that would be cool, actually :)

Thanks again for making those tweaks to the .it file. I hope to hear it soon.

Hey, no rush on any of this stuff. This is meant to be leisurely fun. Leila and I have agreed for there to be no deadlines or rushing on it. But thank you for such a quick response. I figured it would be no trouble for you since OpenMPT is like your native habitat. ;-)

(By the way, Midnight Greenhouse is one of the coolest tracks with that crazy organ, and the chiming bell sound.
Your emoticonically named song =( does sound a little bit medieval, but more accurately is pretty jazzy. You may be the first to make medieval jazz. It sounds cool to me, may it'll catch on.)

http://puu.sh/9bjtY/749e86b2d0.it Here, yeah I think it might've been deleted by accident =( anyways

Sega CD would be a nice format haha but first we gotta learn ourselves how to do stuff for it, flawlessly - if we, the proposers of the idea, can't do it right, who will be able to?
Well, surely some people will be able to figure out by themselves, but still ;P Incase we end up suggesting it, if we have the knowledge beforehand it'll be nicer because people won't need to research stuff by themselves, also incase it becomes a format we could to a lyceum article for it, getting some Pedagogist points! Sounds fun, doesn't it? Since we like to write long stuff and apparently we do so with certain ease, we'd do a good job at it I think.

I don't know, it's not a bad idea per se but when you see three entries by some person in a certain compo, you expect them to be different, not similar to each other (even if they're not perfect covers). That might end up on some people downvoting your tracks, and that'd be a bad thing. BUT, if you put all 3 on a single mp3 file you could upload it to Wildchip (as a single song), and then explaining in the description. But I think it would be more practical to upload Lunar Light Zone (Past) to the SGen category, and do other stuff to the other categories, that is, if you wish to. But that's just my opinion, if you want to upload each arrangement in the same compo (which seemingly is 'legal'), go for it, actually positions don't matter when you're having fun :D (but it does feels really nice to get good positions though, at least for me)
Incase you're gonna do it, just check with some admin beforehand, they might interpret them like covers of each other and that would be a bad thing I guess D:

I don't know if you know, but Spring Tracks 3 ended! Savestate's Famitracker entry (which you claimed to be one of your favorites on that compo) got 5th! It was pretty good :D Although it placed higher than I expected. But it's pretty lovely, and deserved that position IMO.
I got 24th/silver on Deflemask with 'la bruja mala', 45th/bronze on Pandatracker with 'pandas are cute and so is golgi' and 96th with my battle art (flowers and trackers), those were good positions imo and I'm happy with them :3

Also, another compo just began, take a look - the rules are a bit confusing (and a bit restrictive), but it seems fun. I began to do something for it, if you wanna take a listen here it is: http://puu.sh/9bpPy/a78a811e9c.mp3 :D

I'm kinda having a lot of free time now (by either doing homework really soon or neglecting it and doing it the day before the deadline haha) but right now I'll try to focus on this song, and afterwards, on this one https://www.dropbox.com/s/qy0zeoc09ro9rli/funky%20dream.it
This latter one will be for a mod24k category on Summer Chip IV. So far it isn't even 7kb big, so I guess I gotta a lot of room to work on this. Stealing ipi's techniques for making .it files lighter is so much fun =o
Also since SC4 is not on yet, you have some more time to work on your sgen tune! That's a good thing, I guess!

Yo Tails,
Real quick, your improvements to my Past arrangement work great. Pattern 11 is much better, and did you smooth out pattern 6's sine melody? It just sounds better.

Those, the echo delay sine, piano, everything you did is much appreciated. Leila says it. sounds game ready now and has out looping on her media player.

So how did it feel working on your first Sega CD chip tune?

Hey, your 8bit sampler tune is really snazzy, too. Always dig that jazzy piano stuff. I see a pleasing array of sunny and Pastel colors in my head when I hear it. My brain's wired a little weird, so music takes on shapes and colors to me sometimes.

Your song looks like 7:00pm on a Washington beach a clear day. But the colors in the sky are most prevalent which are painted by the piano chords. Shades of cream orange, hazy purple, and iridescent blues. Slivers of light gray clouds here and there. They change with different progressions of your song.

Well, I gotta get going, but just wanted to say thanks again.

Oh yeah, the lyceum idea sounds cool! I found some technical docs on the Ricoh PCM Chip the other day that will come in handy for that.

Haha I'm glad you and she liked it :D It felt nice, but wasn't the resulting .it file bigger than 64kb? =o Anyways

Thanks! I really like your visual description of my song for some reason. I don't think I said it, but the song's name is "under the sunlight"! Which is a bit controversial since it's Winter here in Brazil (and a kinda cold one tbh, they seem to get colder each year). But I won't be submitting it for this compo - the Fairlight CMI doesn't allow sample-changing in a same channel (which means you cannot use one channel for multiple instruments, like kick/snare in the same one for example), and my song uses that A LOT - so I decided to convert it to .spc because why not? It has 8 channels :P I just had a bit of trouble with the loop points which ended making some samples sound clicky, but I think it's nice overall.
spc: http://puu.sh/9cPJ5/7d0a79392d.spc
mp3 with unmodified samples for comparison: http://puu.sh/9dieg/68306c7385.mp3

Hey, 'sup!

Found out that you don't have to have a limit of 64KB for your total sample set even for Sega CD PCM. The 64KB is how much RAM is allocated for the sound. So the MOD playing program for Sega CD that I found will automatically crop and adjust your sample set (no matter how large) until it can fit it into the RAM.

And Chilly Willy has improved how it's done.

Now, even the original Sonic CD PCM data was over 200KB for each Sample set. They were a single RAW .bin file which were all the samples for a single PAST zone that were smooshed together. One sample would play after another without a single gap, if you play it in a media player. I have to crop out each sample manually in Wavosaur to get individual ones.

Perhaps Sonic CD did 4KB swapping of samples when a new one was needed to replace another instrument in a single channel. If not done right, then it could cause game slowdown... idk. It's actually a faster rate than what Super Nintendo could do.

Chilly Willy's program doesn't do that, though. He is still working on it, and is aiming for in-game friendliness, not wanting to risk any theoretical slowdown.

Makes sense to convert your song to SPC with that situation. You'll get it smoothed out. The vibraphones are definitely nice!

I also heard the Funky Dream tune, and I like where it's going.

Leila and I have going back and forth a lot about this Sonic CD 2 music project. She was pretty excited at the thought of your participation. No pressure, but feel free to stop by and say hi.

A lot's been added: http://marcb0tcollaboration.freeforums.net/

Also, what do you think about his tune: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BwSIBwTxHzm3NTlrNFBBWXJGNDA/edit?usp=sharing

Leila made it last night, and says something is missing. What's your take? The BPM is 100 if you want to add anything to it. I can layer your recordings onto the master wav file when I'm not feeling sick with knots in my stomach like right now :-S.

You are free to invite anyone 18 or older to the forum as well, who you feel would enjoy this community collaboration. I filter out the trolls, so don't worry. :)

Slime ball, that's true, and I hate having to do that, but it is a good way to get yourself in troublewrithe the corruption in my country's legal system. Battle of the bits is different because it kind of has multiple people in charge. My forum is run just by me, so all liability and discussion falls on my shoulders. So I have to be wise and careful about how I run it. It's not intended to be so big like Battle of the Bits is.
However, everyone is able to view the board and benefit from advice or discussion on there. This is as good as I can do.

Tails, it's been really good knowing you and working even on the few tracks we attempted. This old robot body is wearing out, and my chapter is almost over. But from the ashes shall rise a new, different marcb0t. I hope he is more productive and helpful than my current form. But it's so hard to know. My sorrow and grief will surely impact my next incarnation.
I'll see you again... for the first time... Ra... pha... el... Gyaaaaaahhhh!!!

[Streams of brilliant arching light burst forth from every limb of marcb0t 's body]

Systems reloading... error... welcome to marcb0t 3.0... the Sullen Android.

https://raphaelgoul.art seems empty... - nothing appears after clicking on music, projects and contact - i think i have javascript running fine on all web-browsers i use (like waterfox and iridium), otherwise emulators like webmsx and javatari wouldn't work at all
