collaboration feature
BotB Academy Bug Reports and Feature Requests

This is required for the impending game jam. Basically, one BotBr can submit an Entry and then attach other BotBrs to it. Points will be divided up evenly amongst collaborators. Point types can be assigned by the BotBr who originally created the Entry (i.e. Codist, Mixist, Chipist, Grafxist, etc.)

This will be a thing for all majors going forward. Obviously for single format Entries the point types will not be selectable. Whoever is the primary BotBr of an Entry has spent their slot on that format in the Major, but will be able to collab on other tracks of the same format.

This is so cool! Until now the option has been to either create a new profile for both BOTBr's or have one post it with a "feat." the other guy in the description or something. Now we have a true way to split points up evenly and fairly for anyone that wants to work together which I will gladly make use of :). I love collaborating and do not mind sharing points at all for the opportunity to work with some of you insanely talented people. Thank you puke7, I am PUMPED! :D

Finally those mad points won't go to waste on one-off alts. \o/

Question: If I have no friends, and I secretly make a few alts, can I use this feature to pretend I have friends?

More news at 10.

I had a thought/concern on my walk home from work right now.

Bonus points from battles are based on the number of entries. Should collaborations further adjust this number? My thought is that, because people can collaborate, that the entry count might appear low despite a lot of participation. On the other hand, I can see how this might be abused in other Majors just to increase bonuses. Then again, bonuses are only distributed to those who place.

If I were to go this route I'm thinking instead of entry count it would be collaborator count. Many entries would have a single collaborator. Simple enough.

Thoughts? Suggestions?

I think collaborator count (i.e. sum of number of collaborators on each entry, not number of unique collaborators) is a good metric. i don't really see people abusing that system.

edit: plus, if it influences behavior at all, it encourages collaboration, which is cool in my book.

maybe adjust the metric but dont have it a straight 1-1 for each collaborator.

something like:

2 botbrs= 1.5 entries
3 botbrs= 1.75
4=2
5+=2.5

I'm not certain if it should be any more entries? One product is one product.

There could be a flag per battle for if the entry is collaboration-friendly or solo-only. Then you're given a line to type out the BotBr names separated by commas, to which BotB will check if the user exists before submission. Then upon submission the points are distributed evenly; and again upon sluts. The more collaborators, the less points distributed.

Pretty sure that would work without a hitch.

Just let you all know where I'm at with this: I've spent pretty much all my spare time mucking with apache and nginx trying to get my local dev environment setup the way I want it. I've been having some serious permission issues. Basically, I can chown the BotB files to the server host's user and then git blows up and says I've changed all my files, or I can keep ownership and the scripts have no write permissions. I have one more thing to try (chowning the group permissions). I'm a little disappointed here since working this feature out is going to cut into my gamejam time, but this is priority. I'm hoping it'll all be worked out by end of tomorrow (Saturday). So, again, just a heads up, if you can't add collaborators if you finish early you will be able to before the entry period is over. ;D/

Everything is in place now. You should see a link to "Edit Collaborators" on any Entry page that belongs to you during it's battle entry and voting periods. Only affects Entries on Major Battles. I still need to update the payouts at the end of the battle which I will most liekly do next weekend.

If it's not too much trouble, I think it'd be neat if each entry was listed under each of the collaborators' entries on their profile, instead of just being listed under the person who submitted it. (and also have the badges distributed to each of the collaborators for the winning entries as well)

Yes, I intend to display all collaborators avatars with a battle's list of entries. Things get hairy everywhere else as entries and botbrs are 1to1 in the database. I've been thinking about this a bit as to where to store this data to keep database calls simple. Also, I assume, as collabdongs vote on entries they'll notice they can't attain 100% done. I'll be trying to iron all these things out this weekend. The site's architecture was not designed with this in mind. Lists, votes, badges, trophiez and alerts are all affected in the edge case of collabdong.

sorry if im missing something obvious

From what I understand, everyone who collaborated on an entry is supposed to be given webdevist points from downloads/votes/etc. But the individual points for each collaborator (mixist, codist, etc) have not been implemented yet.

I sat down to work on this Tuesday night after work, but checked my email first. In doing so I found an email from Dreamhost saying BotB is too big and I have a limited amount of time to get it moved to a different hosting service either with them or someone else. I have applied for an extension on this. The cheapest thing I have come up with is moving to Virtual Private Server with a fat SSD. Well, even cheaper than that is hosting it in my home. It's time to switch on the google fiber anyways. I've been working really hard at the new job and have a lot of lower back pain. It might be in our interest to extend the voting period until all of this is figured out.

i really gave this a solid try today; put in about 7 hours
collab management is really close
there's some serious problem solving around handling votes and keeping in mind that a user can have multiple botbrs
basically it's really late and i keep seeming to overwrite b-knox info with puke7 info or vice versa
i really need to figure out the local dev environment thing

if anyone wants to see if they can actually save the class types to their collaborators that'd be swell; adding and removing collabdongs is curently disabled

i'll see what i can figure out tomorrow
but i'm not holding my breath

yeah there's no reason it shouldn't apply to everyone involved. it's far more unfair to only apply to one person, especially if everyone did next to equal work on the submission
