B-Knox: http://www.kettering.edu/physics/drussell/Demos/Fourier/Fourier.html

The phenomenon of pretty much any waveform being able to be broken down into a series of sine waves and vice versa.

Are we allowed to synthesize our own waveforms using the sine sample or is it expected to have purely sine-tastic tracks?

i would say as long as you create the fourier spectrum of your sound manually, it's ok. you obviously shouldn't be allowed to work from another source to get the target spectrum (because then that's "using" the other sample).

Ok, so creating your own waveforms from this sine and then saving/using those as samples is not allowed?

Also, there's a ton of things you can do with a sine wave, like going FM crazy. Just wanna clarify some things so I don't get yelled at if I turn in something that sounds like a shitty DX7, haha.

edit: Ok, the better question to ask: Is the focus on making sine music or on how crafty you can be with sine waves as a source?

i believe the focus is
> how crafty you can be with sine waves as a source

of course, if your craft is to just make sine music.... ;)

It's pretty easy to do manipulation with a sine source -- change the sample's sign, and you now have a rich wave [like a squarewave with sine curves instead of straight lines in the middle of the pulses] to do detuning effects and whatnot. Assuming this is legal of course... :P

EDIT: also the blatantly obvious ability to clip the samples :3

So....could you use an additive synthesizer which uses sine waves to build up a sound or would you have to do it manually using the sine sample provided?

Hey Satsuma, I think the deal is that you can mangle the provided sine sample in any way, shape, or form, but you can't just use any sine wave source just cause it's a sine.
I would think you would need a way to prove you used that sine as your original sound source, regardless of what you did with it.
That is just my understanding - don't take that for the gospel truth.
Only reason I am saying this is cause I had been asking the same questions... :)

I must say that any sine wave is a sine wave, but this question is good, and I don't have a proper answer! =O

satsuma, I'm no rulemaker or anything, but I'd vote on "you need to use the sine sample provided." If you understand additive synthesis with using a sine as the source, there should be nothing holding you back to reproduce this manually via samplers. I'm using this method as well for some of my sounds and there is definitely a charming quality to the slight imperfections in my squares and saws produced manually through use of the overtone series. Even more of a charm when you start adding them; you would definitely hear a difference between building them yourself and what would be built perfectly by an additive synth like the one you describe. Not even mentioning the great saw you'd get by setting the loop point at quarter cycle or getting a square-like one from crushing the waveform with different types of distortion...could take it even further by playing with phase relationships, detuning, etc. (like null1024 said!)

Even if there were samplers that provided an overtone/additive feature, it would still sound quite different since you have to manually set loop points. I've never heard of a sampler that provided this function, but kudos if you make your own Max/MSP patch or get jiggy with python or something.

For these reasons, I feel, a sine isn't a sine isn't a sine and it's the beauty of this compo: breaking down sampling and synthesis to its core and seeing what people do with it.

Oh man. Well said gyms. All the things that were kinda floating around in my head not knowing what to do with themselves are coming into focus.

That's also what I like about this compo- there is no sound more "pure" and basic than a sine wave - this is the basic idea of FM synthesis - that virtually any sound can be created by manipulating sine waves with other sine waves.

Additive synthesis takes a more "natural" approach - the idea that any tone quality or timbre is just a result of overtones (partials) being present or absent to varying degrees, and attempting to recreate those timbres mathematically with...sine waves.
It's pretty thought-provoking stuff.

You could build a house with bricks and mortar, or you could combine the atoms necessary to create bricks and mortar and then build a house. Don't get all scientific on me...I'm speaking philosophically here! :P

Well, I've decided, reluctantly, that I must bow out of this compo. I had something 75% together, and I think it would have been really good, but due to recent events in my life, I have not been able to devote the time necessary to complete it. It sucks...but that's life. I'll bring some fierce competition to the next Amen Sin, just wait and see. The process of preparing for this one taught me a LOT of things. Good luck to you all.
