GEMS (Genesis Editor for Music and Sound Effects) was an all-in-one audio solution developed to aid western game developers in writing music for Genesis hardware. It shipped with a library of 104 unique presets and an FM editor, however since it could interface with MIDI sequencers, many composers opted to simply use the patches as-is without modification. And SO WILL WE!! Let us participate in the grand tradition of sound design corner-cutting!
In this battle, you must write the best music you can while using only the original 104 GEMS presets for your FM instrumentation. This means no modifying instrument operators and no using macros or effects that would alter operator values. However, all other macros and effects are fair game. You can use as many of your own samples and PSG instruments as you'd like, and can write something that sounds "GEMS-like" or something completely different.
The bitpack contains all of the original GEMS patches, converted to TFI for convenience. If you need them in another format, you can download GEMS and open the original FMLIB\PATCH.BNK file with this tool.
