question for those who know: I'm using maxymiser for my YM entry and i'm using samples. The lyceum says that using DMA is not allowed. Is 'DMA' the two sample channels after the three YM channels? I've been using them because I figured that I would be allowed to since I downloaded the normal version of maxymiser instead of the DMA one.

@Yung Gotenks: The maxYMiser version that bears the name 'DMA' is just the 1st version with this feature. All subsequent versions have that feature too. For your future entries, know that you can use samples in the YM channels. Samples played by the YM are better for the following reasons:
- compatible with the full Atari ST range
- 4 bits resolution add a charismatic crisp to your samples, more lo-fi, more vintage, more seductive, more badass, etc. also more better
- if you wanna play melodies, instead of using your keyboard, you get to enter the tracker command R on each sample row followed by the hexadecimal code that corresponds to the desired replay frequency. it's more cumbersome (read rewarding), and you can't fine tune so it adds even more character (call it microtonal)
- 5 channels are way too many anyway: each additional channel induces more distraction and loss of focus!

Hey folks! (Excessively) n00b here. Is Dual PCM allowed for Sega entries? Presumably it would play in an emulator when done, but technically (I believe) it was achieved through a software driver, so wasn't sure. Thanks in advance!

Also, as a newcomer, trying to be more social and would consider doing a collaboration with anybody just trying to mix things up! I use Furnace / Renoise / Reaper in that order of frequency.

heya! pretty sure the dual PCM mixing version is allowed, although i'm not sure if anyone's tested it on hardware, which i'd be curious to know about and i think would ultimately decide the final answer. (seems like it should theoretically work? no actual extra channels involved after all) i was going to use it in my entry actually, but was unsatisfied with how much of a hit the sample rates took, so i switched back.

i'd say go for it for the time being though!

I'm fairly certain Dual PCM should work on real hardware, I think A64's .vgm used it when I tested it the other day and it played fine on my Genesis, although you may have to watch out for the filesize. If you want you can send the file my way and I can check it for you!

wildchip is really just about evoking at least something that makes you think of chiptunes or video games. so like some SNES or PS1 samples or something is def good enough. a prominent square wave is good enough

I do hope people use the extra time for finishing their votings - 120 BotBs submitted entries to this year's Winter Chip compo vs. some of the entries down the list seem to currently have just 16 votes, so the "votes vs participant"-ratio still has a little bit of room for improvement I think. Of course, voting is a somewhat time-consuming process with 300+ entries, but it's not "that bad" in the end if you split your votings to multiple days and do it for example few format category at a time. If an old lazy geezer like me can do it, so can you :D Plus of course while doing so, you get to enjoy a lot of awesome music (+ some pixel art) in the process.
