The biggest note I have for this compo is the sheer number of songs that sound alike to my eyes... I have a feeling that this might end up being a very close race.

On a different note, although I don't notice it as much, some of these song overdo it on the distortion. They're lucky that it doesn't completely kill the sound, because I can tell when they overdid the volume if it ends up killing the sound to some extent. That's why I keep my recordings raw and don't apply any additional "mastering" post-production (on the flip side, if I do get distortion, sometimes it can stay there, but in other cases I don't keep it).

To be serious for a moment, mastering should never introduce additional distortion, unless you for some reason did compression after loudness maximization. That'd only happen if you screwed up and clipped the master. You may be worried that mastering compression would overemphasized distorted signals, but a nice mastering job should never lead a mix far astray to begin with.

Unless I don't know what I'm talking about, but I think I'm on the mark here.

That said, you put mastering in quotes, so it could be possible you're talking about simple fx or maybe good old run-of-the-mill clipping.

If you get unintended distortion, chances are, you're clipping. Turn down the channel. If that makes it not sit in the mix, turn down all the other channels, too(except the master channel). If you're recording sound and your waveform peaks, don't let it. Turn down the recording input. You can normalize the waveform later and get it as loud as you need.

I haven't! But that sounds like either they're clipping (bad mixing) or being harshly walled by a limiter (bad mastering). I won't judge!

I didn't factor this into my voting unless it was overkill (none of them were overkill to my ears). However, I have a feeling it might happen in the Metal II entries... and I'm fine if that happens (Thankfully I use Renoise's Auto Gain feature so I don't have to deal with clipping on my entry).

Turn down your channels' volumes, dude!!

Auto Gain is a limiter. In fact, it's a simple mastering tool. Pushing Auto Gain too hard while it's on is exactly the same as overcompression and the latter of the two problems I mentioned. If Auto Gain is constantly necessary, turn stuff down so that you don't even need it.

(Of course, you don't have to do any of this, these are just tips for keeping your mix in control)
