post #4761 :: 2007.02.16 6:04am
Hey all, this is a repost from the MilkyTracker forums. I thought I might get a better response here so I'm reposting it.

I'm trying to compose a list of classic chiptunes aka "essentials" no chiptune fan should be without. As I'm rather new to the genre and I keep hearing certain tunes popping up in retro games, old school demos and what not, many times appearing on youtube without any info.

I'd like to know once and for all these "classics", the bare essentials. Having them lurking in corners and generally being so elusive is not conducive to anyone trying to learn more about these masterpieces. And having to slog through the literally thousands of tunes available between The Mod Archive and chiptune.com is an exercise in futility. So maybe we could get a list going?

Post them like so:

Song Name - File Name - Artist's Name - Year of Release

No need to get all nit-picky about the details. Just post as much info as you can. If I can find the tune I'll update the list.

Long live the all mighty chiptune!

The whole HVSC isn't really doing the job as "classical"... as they mix some tracks which were made some years ago and aren't considered as "classical".

check this

listen to remix medely 1.

I realize it's not a "classic chip tune" however, it's a great way to introduce the genre.

besides... what other chipist do you know that gets booked at NYC's Knitting Factory?

is widely regarded as the sickest of all NES songs.

Ah sorry, maybe I should be a bit more specific when I use the term "classic". lol

Classic, for me at least, means something that's remembered fondly. It may or may not have been groundbreaking for the time, but something about it caused it to leave an impression in history.

I know this is a very personal thing as everything effects our lives differently. But I'm sure there's some common ground i.e. chiptunes that have greatly influenced the chiptune scene in general. They could be mods, SID files, NSF's, etc. It doesn't matter as long they were influential to the chiptune scene, that is they influenced ALL chiptuners regardless of format.

I hope that clears things up! ;)

Popcorn is an oft remixed tune. And wire did a lot of remakes of epic C64 tunes; look him up at modland. (Comic bakery, Commando, Sanxion, come to mind...)

I'd also consider zalza, dalezy, beek, and edzes to be influential. And nagz.

"catch that goblin" was a jam, baron. i think it was mod, yeah? i used it in an old cartoon i did.

my favorites, even though maybe not classic
C64
ANYTHING BY PATRICK PETERS
--patrick peters - tendance part 5 (1991)
i've said this before somewhere, but this is probably my favorite song of all time... despite the fact that it's a short loop. i've literally let the file play for 3 to 5 hours at a time.
--patrick peters - future composer 3 (part 1)
--rodney balai - audial delight
the way the bassline comes in is soooo nice.

there's a ton more sids, but i'll keep it short & in sections

NSF (NES)
the entire guardian legend soundtrack
the entire blaster master soundtrack (especially stages 5 and 7)
the ending song from alfred chicken

SAP (ATARI)
marek badkowski - fad face
and anything else by him

adam bienias - farewell song
and anything else by him (especially partyland 1. really good drums)

my player won't play my sc68's right now so's i can't be ye olde reporter for amiga trax at the moment

spc (super nintendo)
it's still a chip, even tho they sound like midis.
ALFRED CHICKEN ENDING SONG AGAIN
the plok soundtrack is good. good game too

VGZ/VGM (SEGA MASTER SYSTEM)
alex kidd in shinobi world soundtrack

my snd's won't play either :((
