Just thinking it may be a cool feature for those botbrs who have a lotta playlists, and may benefit from being able to differentiate between them at a glance (looking at you kleeder!)
Same pixel limitations as the avatar.
Also may encourage botbrs to make on-site eps or albums with the content they've already made (probably what I'd do lol)

funfact, when i commissioned the playlist feature, i specifically decided against having this feature.

well that's the thing, not everyone has the right badges for that. n00bs like myself who aren't mightied wouldn't be able to host said battol... and having certain features locked like that doesn't seem right :(

Levels 14 through 16, 8 and 9 do not yet unlock anything, so perhaps one of those could unlock the feature for 125x125 playlist covers?

i'll add on to this by saying that lvl 18 also doesn't unlock anything. while it is harder to get to his level than, say, level 9 or 14, achieving mighty status should indicate an implicit level of familiarity and respect with the game enough to not abuse the mechanic for saucier means. of course, by that logic, levels 14 through 16 should also speak to that effect, though to a lesser extent i would say. point is: i agree with pidge in that it should be a thing, but kleeder does have the right idea in making it an unlock for later on.

re 213678: no one would participate in a battle like that. its like hosting a battle where someone has to make a pfp for YOU so YOU can use it.

the bitpack would be closer to "everyone draw what you want" vs "everyone draw what I want".

I want to repeat that "botb is not soundcloud"... there are already websites where you can release songs with whatever art you want, although I do understand wanting to add an image to a compilation that was otherwise all stuff you made for botb. I think hosting a battle is a perfect emergent solution for this

While I defo agree blower that there are plenty of things and features that work on soundcloud or another website - which wouldn't work on botb, it would be too easy to apply that logic generally to all feature requests. We could've said the same thing regarding playlists themselves for example, that you can always put the tracks on another site to organize them into lists (though granted, they're a far more significant inclusion than this idea).

Getting sidetracked though, the playlist cover xhb idea works for me personally I guess. Hadn't thought of it beforehand.
Still, I don't see any particular reason against it, except maybe that there are better feature request ideas lol.

I mean this is Battle of the Bits after all, so I think the solution being "host a battle" is perfectly fitting. More battles is usually a good thing, and if you can't host your own there's almost always someone that would be willing to do it for you.

i think hosting a battle that even gently touches upon the concept you want works! but you can't tackle it from that angle of "make art for me lol" (like swnoodle mentioned), there needs to be some genuine and separate purpose too.

i'm actually really not into the idea of allowing the hosting of external images in general because it's hard to moderate and we already kinda have enough to manage on the site. avatars are at least very obviously public and visible everywhere so if someone's avatar requires moderation it can get noticed and handled... other places not so much. 🤷

level-gating it is probably a fine solution too, though. not because i'm into the idea of gatekeeping features broadly speaking, but its purpose is to limit the number of people who would be able to abuse it - if you are level 17 or whatever you are probably already pretty earnestly ingratiated with the site/community

my final thought is that the hosting an xhb route is zero extra work for puke while any other route is nonzero

i still stand by level-gating it if it ever gets implemented but the "host an xhb for it" way does play into the core thing this site is, should it be hosted in the right way: a game

it's not about gatekeeping features because it's fun to be mean, it is about rewarding active and dedicated n00bz with some additional functionality, as it was always done on botb.

a battle like "design a cover art for a playlist and mention the playlist id in the entry title" would work and very similar things have been done before with a lot of participation.
even stuff like "draw me a new avatar" was done in the past with a lot of participation. sweatynoodle: only because you don't feel like joining such a battle doesn't mean noone would do it.

I repeat myself, but you can also, as always, ask someone else to host a battle for you with a specific theme. even if you don't have the badge, this would not prevent you from asking others.

also... there are thousands of image entries on botb already. I'm absolutely sure there's already a piece of art for every possible purpose

when I went to make my first playlist, I was delighted to find that I had to pick an existing piece of visual art on botb to use as the cover art - it just felt so nice and symmetrical - it's a playlist of botb art, with botb art as the thumbnail!

And then while you click around looking for a satisfactory image, you necessarily end up getting exposed to entries and battles and botbrs that you might never have otherwise stumbled across - the whole process just kind of keeps you looped back in.

idk, I do get the desire to use your own custom art - but for the record, I think there's a particular enjoyment you can get by flipping through other people's pixel entries the way you might dig through a crate of records. Maybe this? No, maybe this? Oh, what about this?

And yea, I suppose as Dami says, potential moderation could be an issue (although I do think that's one of the other benefits in locking a feature behind a level requirement - which you do also point out - it's still a valid concern).

I also do find myself agreeing with the sentiment; keeping the art in confines to what's on Botb is a lot cooler than using outside material. Both for motivating botbrs to search botb for entries, and because it might motivate a battle, which prestune and others here point out.

i just don’t like the idea of adding a new feature for certain levels. some people would instantly gain access to said feature because they’re already way past the required level, while other people who aren’t high enough level still have to grind for it.

you might not be aware, but there are a lot of features that are already level-gated. many of them are perks, as this would be too. in a broad sense this is part of the gameification of BotB, this MMO we're all playing by being creative. but as i mentioned before, if an external image uploading function wasn't level-gated, it would be easy for any jokester/spammer/etc to register an account (or an alt) and use the feature to upload something nasty or even illegal, a situation that would obviously require moderation action and also one which might put puke or the site in jeopardy depending on severity; and because of this page's relative obscurity, this would be extra work for us to even check for - i.e. we as admins would have to check the playlist page every now and then to make sure everything was fine. level-gating, then, is a way of ensuring the only people who have access to the feature are ones for whom it would be a substantial loss of good grace to pull something shitty. (while also doubling as a reward perk in the game of BotB like kleeder said.) someone level 17 is way less likely to be willing to burn bridges (not 100% of course, but 99%).
