years ago i think i created a thread somewhere with a request for a bunch of formats, and i think Blender was one of them (i can't remember exactly)

the idea of bringing this battle format to BotB would be for several reasons:
- a 3d modeling battle format here would be cool
- there are some botbrs that actually love 3d modeling, and would enjoy a lot having such battles here
- botbrs that would want to learn it, and perhaps botb would be among the very best places to that
- game developers often looks for assets like 3d models, and this would help to spread about BotB among them, and better, would motivate them to start creating these models as well instead of only using them
- etc.

(edit: for those that eventually never heard about Blender: https://www.blender.org/ )

Blockbench is also an option for low poly stuff, but that's off topic.
About that last point before etc what's the point if you're stuck with CC BY-NC-SA 3.0—wait, still of topic.
It would be interesting for sure but would it work in execution? 3D modeling could take considerably way more time to even do simpler things with than other formats.

I love blender but I would say gltf or USD would make more sense because you can open them in more programs, even natively on macos and on browsers and phones and stuff, so no need for renders! the blender file format is also real weird and bulky, it's like an annotated dump of blender's internal memory structures or something, kinda impossible to process without using blender itself

i was thinking about .obj as well (which is .txt based), as used since the good old Alias Wavefront (renamed to Maya around 25 years ago) - most or almost all 3d editors imports and exports .obj, including Blender since a long time ago

@Bingies24 in few minutes you can create a simple 3d model with some complexity, which i think cand be perfectly suitable for 1hb battles perfectly

I'd love to have blockbench and a generic 3d format like gltf or usd like luigi64 suggested.
One thing that I'm curious about is how well blender can export stuff like shader nodes, geometry nodes, etc. bc there seems to be a lot of cool stuff you can do with them that might justify a .blend format in addition to a generic 3d file format. There's also ways to implement interactivity and animations into blender files. I don't really know how inefficient .blend files are in terms of storage space, but the demo geometry node projects from the blender website are very small, being only about 100-300kb

+1 on generic 3d model format, both for more compatibility between different programs and to not blur the line of what's allowed in the format

shit I completely forgot I was gonna make a format request for povray…you can do some really neat stuff there, I think it could pass as a codist format

yes povray works different than blender
for all who are interested, see POV-Ray

I wouldn't compare POV-Ray and Blender directly, it's a different class of software. Blender is a 3D modelling program, while POV-Ray is pretty much just a renderer that can be utilised by other software for the final output (and happens to have its own scene description language).

gltf for general modeling would be great!
It'd be interesting to learn Blender through OHBs, but I can't really see myself wanting to learn it any other way.
As to @nitrofurano, I admit I may have been overthinking it a little bit.

if it is about submitting gltf files then the new format should not be named blender.

gltf is a json file with may embed some binary data. so in theory it could also be created using a text editor, somewhat similar to svg.

here's the latest glft specifivation glTF 2.0 Specification

To @Ahornberg:
I'm not saying a separate Blender format can't exist but it wouldn't make sense for modeling battles to be limited to Blender either. Having glTF or both glTF and Blender formats solves the problem easily.

This is something I've been missing on here as well. Technically you can render 3d for some grafxicist formats, but it's quite different to actually have 3d models that you can rotate and such.
I'd also prefer a generic 3d modeling focused format using .obj more. Opens up much more software.
Other formats could be added later, if 3d modeling is popular enough.

This would also need a new class methinks.

i think this feature request calls for a much more broad modelling format or, like kaytse said, perhaps even class? being modellist or something? sure its still a graphixist format as whatever you make will ultimately export to a png or something, but id like to think its almost a seperate parallel to the overall graphic art formats, the same way mixist and chipist formats still ultimately song based formats at the end of the day.

but yeah if something like this was to come around, we would be able to have all sorts of formats for broad 3d model files like .obj or project files like .blend
