what's the poly note limit?

i started a project to remake all of carpenter brut's music into general midi format while also being compatible with doom. im at hang em all rn and have found that instruments are cutting out when i replay the exported midi. im using fruity lsd to generate sound from midi out channels, which doesnt run into that issue.

by general midi I assume you mean MSGS (Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth.) If not, then max polyphony depends on the synth you're using.

so its been a long time since I've messed around with doom level editing - Is this just vanilla doom you're working with? I almost don't want to lead you down the wrong path , take this with a huge grain of salt -

I think there was a thing, if you're using the MUS format, where the first half of the channels (1-4?) are the 'primary' channels and the other half (5-8?) are 'secondary', and then there's an extra channel reserved for drums - the polyphony limit is essentially 9 voices then, one per channel - but if all channels are in use, and a primary tries to play, it'll steal a channel from a secondary? I feel like there was something about, if you play a chord in one of the primary channels, it uses other channels to fulfill that command?

Love the idea of porting Carpenter Brut for DOOM regardless, very appropriate. Hope you get it sorted!

we've done .wad battles here in the past though... maybe it'd be a fun format to resurrect!
