although this is a pretty niche format, it's still a rather interesting one to me, and i think it would find a home here. rich media format is MIDI-based but allows for custom samples, as well as effects like chorus and reverb. instruments themselves can use LFO and flanger for example too. the built-in bank, patches111, also has 128 special patches on bank 1, similar to how yamaha XG has its own unique patches too. i've written a lyceum article about Beatnik Editor

the battle format could accept both midi and rmf as submissions: midi for if you only use the special patches, and rmf for if you use your own custom patches/samples

if this format does become a thing here, i'd say restrict it to using the built-in patches111 bank, the same way that yamaha XG is restricted to certain hardware. some banks, such as nokia's mango bank, have their own special patches

probably not for the regular format, but i'm not sure. maybe there could be three formats:

- rmf - tracks using patches111, the default bank of beatnik editor and player so these are how they'd sound on an old website for example
- midi_nokia - tracks using nokia banks, probably midi-only since nokia phones didn't have built-in rmf ringtones
- rmfplus - tracks using any soundbank you want, as long as it's rmf or a midi rendered on beatnik audio engine

This is so cool :) Was vaguely aware of rmf for a while, but hadn't properly explored what it's about, some nice possibilities. It seems like a great addition, hope this becomes a format!

Wondering about best approach for non-windows platforms— beatnik editor runs stably in WINE, but there is a fair amount of latency.
