Wouldn't it be cool to have format roles in discord, that one could assign themselves so that it would be possible to ping all [insert format here] enthusiasts when hosting, or requesting help or something? Did I make sense?

i remember several discussions about this.
we have 80+ formats and having a role for every single one is too much.
but only having a few and people filtering their botb-experience would go a little against the spirit of the site i think


to answer your questions tho: yes it would be cool, yes you make sense! :D

i don't think having a role for each format is too much.. the role limit for servers is 250, so you wouldn't even be cutting it close. the bottleneck would be actually assigning yourself those roles, which seems best done with Reactions but would be cumbersome to go through for some folks

wasn't sure i was expressing myself clearly enough :) sure one role per format would be too many but maybe a selection of about 15 would be worth it? all similar formats could be in the same role (like all nsf variants+0cc & famitracker)

I think having basically one role per format, while combining similar formats is the way to go. I feel like there is a pretty easy way to combine formats in this way as many of the formats may be functionally different but aesthetically/musically similar. For instance most Grafxist formats can be combined.

I also think some formats don't necessarily need roles. While you could make the case for some roles to have dedicated pings I think some formats are not used enough to warrant.

I feel like it's kind of up to the BoTB community, but I think dedicated discord pings would be a good idea.

what if there was discord botb feature, with its own menu/perusr database, or a configurable menu on botb for the bot to reads, one could configure formats to be pinged if one has the XHB role on botb discord?

at one point i had started on a discord bot that would let you subscribe to specific format alerts (it didn't involve roles at all), but there was other stuff going on and i figured a simpler solution would be found. which i guess did happen, sort of. i could look into this again. .. if i get 13 lieks on this comment

We shouldn't group too many formats into one group. Having an individual group for less common/rare formats will make it easier for people to send out a notification for a specific format, and get people interested in the format coordinated, which I feel like would lead to a lot more uncommon formats getting more attention.
Some formats that have overlapping "userbases", like the tiny modules or the various versions of MIDI could be grouped, but I'm not sure if I would go further than that.

Ex: if i'm really interested in AYM, and I want to gauge interest in a battle for AYM, it would be better if I could send out a message to other people with an interest in AYM, rather than a general message to people interested in soundchips in general, who may have little to no interest in AYM.

discord is kinda limited when it comes to emojis. I think that the server is already at the emoji limit. all the formats as emojis would be very hard to perform, but it could be possible to do this with a bot that sends an emoji when a certain word is sent.

edit: this bot approach is very flawed because of the unnecessary chat filling with emojis.

I may be wrong but iirc bots can use emojis from servers they're in anywhere

so you'd just have the bot in an empty server or two with all of the format emojis

and then that same bot in the actual botb server

and then you'd have that bot create a message in the welcome channel or whatever with all the necessary reactions for role assignment (although you'd probably need to split it across a few different messages due to discord's reaction limit)
