i was thinking about the BADGE LEADERBOARD today. i had the idea of a recurring SEASON on battle of the bits to draw more attention to xhbs!

the idea is like this: every "season" (meaning a predetermined length of time, not necessarily referring to temperate seasons like winter and spring), there would be a tally of badge-progress-earning entries in any given xhb category. this would contribute to badges as they currently exist and ALSO: towards a "seasonal badge" .

much like how medaled badges work right now, each user above a certain threshold (28, 56, 98) would earn a medaled badge for that season. at the end of the season, the badge would be placed on the botbr's profile, in a similar way that major battle medals are ! this would give users capped out on a certain category more of a reason to participate in battle categories that they've already earned the golden badge for, and also give more of a general incentive to continuously participate in xhbs/.

some obvious points of attention that owuld need to be decided for this:
1. season length. a season shouldnt be too long as to punish people for being inactive for an extended period of time, but not too short as to rush botbrs to earn their badges.
2. badge-earning thresholds. should they be as high as all-time badges? maybe they should be lower and to more reasonably adjust for the length of the season.

doc also pointed out that if xhb seasons were of fixed-length, you could feasibly calculate the participation values for all "past seasons" on battle of the bits before the implementation of this feature, so the key players in the earlier days of botb could retroactively receive a reward for high-participation back then as well. let me know what u think :]

first off this is a really cool idea, and i think placing these seasonal badges with major medals is a sensible way to go about it (though if they were to also be computed and retroactively added for the past decade+ of botb, maybe they deserve their own area beneath major medals; it will fill up a lot of space, ultimately)

regarding point 2, it kind of depends on point 1 (season length) as to where the threshold is for each badge tier, but they should definitely be lower than the standard badge thresholds. getting bronze (28 entries) in anything already requires quite a bit of effort, and silver/golden are big achievements even overall, non-seasonally.

realistically, the largest season length we'd be discussing would be like 3 months, i think? (probably between 1 and 3 months.) i'll stick with that figure - 28 entries (regular bronze) would mean you did an entry in that format roughly once every 3 days. i think that's a pretty big amount of participation in a single format but it is reasonably attainable, so maybe it would be a decent benchmark for "seasonal silver". "seasonal gold" should be difficult to get imo, a real reward, so maybe 56 is actually fine for that (doing a format entry once every 1.6 days or so). "seasonal bronze" on the other hand is harder to figure. 7 (normal badge) is too easy, and 14 might also be too easy (you could almost get this by doing peoples' weekly series every week), but increasing it starts pushing towards silver... maybe 18 or so?

or we re-write the numbers entirely, disregarding the regular badge setups, and end up with something like 20 - 40 - 60, idk. (making silver quite a bit tougher as well, but i think that's fair)

(incidentally i know the idea of platinum/diamond/?? badges above golden have been discussed before, and that's another plausible incentive to keep people going after golden... makes sense at this point considering how far people have gone above golden allgear, and even classic DOS module)

@Kleeder??!? Where are you, you crazy badger hunter??
As for I, a very exciting idea indeed >:)))) The Pigeons approve. I hope this idea gets traction.
