Okay, so what if there was a darwinian music thing, where everybody would just throw their tunes in, and people just vote on songs as they come in. Every time at a certain interval, the system erases the lowest scoring songs so they disappear, never to be seen again. The top ten survive, and keep fighting against newer songs coming in. The score of songs degrades over time, so that it's impossible for one top rated song to dominate forever.

Interesting... However, is there a time limit? As in, the song(s) that survive the most time get a prize or something? Because if not, I don't see the point much, it'd be pretty much like a BotB version of real life Billboard ratings, but fully competitive.

It's just so people can put their music up and see how well their songs do against other people in a competitive environment, and also get feedback.

This relates to a couple other ideas I've had, namely : Pop Chart and BotBr Disk Space. Pop Chart would be a list of very carefully calculated ranking entries by current notoriety based on BotBr behaviours. BotBr Disk Space would be around 10mb, earned at a very early level. More space (or 'partitions') would be available for boons.

If Pop Chart was plural (ex. Pop Charts), and BotBr Disk Space existed, then tracks could be split into remix, chiptune, and BotBr Disk Space Pop Charts. . . maybe?

I was thinking that the lowest ranking entries would get bopped off completely, though.

puke7: so disk space would essentially be a place where people could upload tracks without them being part of a compo?

architect1: i object to the deletion of content, if at all possible to avoid :) off the charts perhaps, but off botb, no way!

Xterm, I think, if I understand Archie's idea well enough, that the point of this idea is that a BotBr who submits a composition to the Darwinian thing knows what he's getting into: if the song performs poorly, it's killed. Nobody has to use it, but it makes for a fun way to introduce some stakes.

Also, what if periodically, say, each month or however long, the poorest-performing tracks would be placed on the Chopping Block, and BotBrs could listen to those tracks that were in danger of elimination. If they really liked one or more of them, they could somehow save them from execution, maybe by paying boons or something. And higher-level BotBrs could have more influence on how well the Darwinian tracks do.

All in all, I think it's a great idea.

i like the idea too... it clicked more for me after reading the way you explained it.

i was originally thinking more along the lines that BotB should work as an archive of its own activity... so deleting any content from the site is kind of against that philosophy. similar reasoning to why we save irc logs from OHCs.

to me, it's less about the uploader and more about the rest of the community. the uploader will still have their source file, and can easily listen to it any time even if it's taken off BotB. but say another BotBr logs in after a few months of being inactive, and missed a lot of the Darwinian content...

i don't know, i could go either way on this. maybe "dead" entries, instead of being deleted outright, are marked in a certain way (different palette?), or maybe they cost boons to listen to... or maybe there's an item you get from a merchant that lets you access one (or even resurrect one into the compo!)

There's no need for an entry "kicked out of the charts" to be unavailable. Maybe it should be found through the author BotBr's profile, along with his OHCs and Major Battle entries. Those songs could have its own section, where each entry could be displayed with stats such as "total time on charts", "highest place on chart", etc.

it's a fun idea although i'd never enter :P

i don't agree with the score degrading over time, though.... if a song written next month is still setting the bar in 2015, so be it. it's just something to aim for

perhaps the score could degrade over time, but if it manages to survive long enough, it goes to some kind of a hall of fame where it can be saved forever. perhaps purchasable by boons at that point, the ammount of boons relating to how long it survived.

if the song fails to survive long enough then it would only be viewable through author pages.

this would be pretty awesome. I would love it!
