making an official bulletin about these, for a while I've been hosting numbered THEORYWANK OHBs and recently added on a series called Kargyraa Choir. I will explain both in this thread.

Theorywank is XHBs (theorywank 4HB soon?) based on absolutely ridiculous and dumb theory restrictions, usually based on extremely obscure and debated corners of music theory. Note: I do realize theory is a method for ANALYSIS, not for CREATION, but the idea of these XHBs is that your piece must be analyzable to follow the restrictions. Often, these restrictions will be heavily up to interpretation yet extremely strict at the same time; half of the fun is figuring what the heck you were just told to do.

Kargyraa Choir is XHBs that require prominent use of throat singing. Not all Kargyraa Choir battles will be about kargyraa, potentially some will be yodelling, and others, but the name is catchy. For all of these battles, there are provided a samplepack of me and/or other botbrs performing a selection of the allowed forms of throat singing, for people who want to participate but cannot perform the technique in question. Every battle except the first one will also have a theme or restriction that is based very arbitrarily.

If you've been following theorywank, you know I'm not the only one who's hosted theorywanks, which is good! From now on, though, I will be numbering the theorywanks sequentially based on the ones hosted by myself, and hosting them personally.

All of both of these kinds of battles I will host semi-randomly, but I will try to host at least one of either once a week, as long as I have internet at the time.

This thread should serve as discussion of both of these battle series in general and the progress of sets of battles, possibly individual battles as well. I may split theorywank into seasons in the future and give most-common-winners overall winner status of seasons unofficially, but I'm still thinking about that. If I do that, the overall winners will be posted here.

yeah i should probably put a disclaimer

DO NOT ATTEMPT TO PERFORM KARGYRAA FOR KARGYRAA CHOIR IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY LEARNED HOW TO DO IT FROM PROPER GUIDES/TEACHERS. KARGYRAA IS NOT WHAT IT MIGHT SOUND LIKE AND WHAT IT SOUNDS LIKE TO A BEGINNER IS DANGEROUS. SEEK INSTRUCTION BEFORE PERFORMING KARGYRAA.

I don't even know the proper terms. Is that the one where your register is really high and your voice sounds kinda like a heavy smoker's voice box?

Because imo that one hurts the most to attempt to do for any longer than a minute. Every other range/position of throat is easily sustainable for long periods.

two things: 1) the register isn't super high, it's a nasal resonance whistle called sygyt that most kargyraa and khoomei performers use gratuitously for a second note.

2) if it hurts you're doing it completely wrong; kargyraa specifically is performed by tensing the false folds enough that they and the arytenoid cartileges reciprocate over the airstream and create an undertone. properly performed, i can hold a single note for up to 25 seconds with it and i have lung issues, and it doesn't hurt at all.

EDIT: here, it's easier to tell you can't actually do this with you vocal cords if you listen to some dag kargyraa, which is a much deeper form of kargyraa that cuts out the vocal cords entirely and adds epiglottis activation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpfHfZvYZEM
