I realised after some time that Mappist points wouldn't actually be a completely stupid idea, after some of these were pondered...

* Jetpack (old shareware-turned-freeware DOS game (yay for DOSBox))
* ZZT (ditto)
* Snarf
(ditto, with source code available but maybe not classified as open-source - but who cares, as long as there's DOSBox)
* Kye (old windows 3.1 donationware, has many free cross-platform clones such as the rather accurate Python Kye)
* Xye (basically Kye on drugs, and it's open-source & cross-platform)
* Maze making (you'd upload either an image or a text file, just be careful as people would probably use maze generators)
* Age of Empires (sadly it's not free and it's not available on not-windows so maybe not so accessible)
* Red Alert 1 (apparently this IS free now - also available for DOS)
* Everybody Edits (editable adoobie flush platformer game, would probably attract collabs)
* Cube (open-source cross-platform FPS which you edit on the fly)

Any other ideas?

I think this map stuff is crap and that puke7 added Doom WAD/map format just because everyone knows zanzan is really neat.

Obviously, I would rather have original game battles over old game level edits. Is a One Hour Battle enough time for level editing? Anyways, level editing other peoples' games might not be BotB's bag, n00bs.

Wow, that snarf looks hideous.

This new genre is slightly troublesome. Many 0|dskul3 BotBrs are rather hesitant about the whole thing. I don't blame them. Also, it means a whole new gambit of formats (ZZT, Megazeux, Wolf 3D, etc. . . ) and those are just my suggestions. Definitely do not want rom hacking.

But what if we did have a game making battle? What are some more open platforms like python, java & browsers?

@b00d - I added Doom WAD because I got nostalgic high school memories. :P/

What about NSF and other stub-code music format hackings? madbrain has done SPC hacking before and rom-hacking.net has guides for hacking the music for Final Fantasy 1 engine and such...

My only qualm with level editors and game hacking is that the vote times would be so long.

If this is to continue, I think the OHC/OHB formatting could be changed and we could branch off slightly. ...But remain weird as shit, as we are all BotBrs and love as such.

BTW... Love the new avatar.

puke7 there's already been some chit-chat in the format suggestion thread. I've voiced my opinion there, and I'll say it here: cross-platform compatibility will eventually turn out to be a nonviable option.

Actually, there's already a type of 1hc called a BKZX (Blitzkreigzeux) where you make a game in Megazeux in an hour (usually not using original music though) and they're quite hillarious
. I personally reckon you should look at the "really bad games" one, or the "Monday Night Football" one.

If there's a simple graphical framework for a lang such as Ruby (I haven't really looked into gosu
yet but someone used it in an LD48
) then I see it as quite a possibility. Python has pygame and is at a similar level of hack-something-together-quickly-ness.

Java could be worth a crack as it has a graphics library "built in", but on the other hand it's a bit slow to code with.

We have enough programmers to make our own stuff, tbqh. Dare I say it, we may even be able to reverse-engineer some stuff.

On top of that, most of use have DOSBox.

Anyways, with regards to "cross-platform", I guess you could consider the different module players people use as different "platforms" of which not all of them get it right (I HATE MODPLUG AND IT'S GOT NOTHING TO DO WITH THE INTERFACE). Despite the incompatibilites, we have survived.

Also, I seriously doubt anyone here plays .it files in Renoise.

Finally: Yes, I participated in that Sound Club 2 1hc on #mod_shrine. Using Wine on Linux. (actually, I think it was on FreeBSD.)
