Hello, cekra! And welcome to BotB!
Files with LHA and LZH extension are compressed archives, which can contain several files inside! In this case, MC.exe is contained by PMD480.LZH, and MCH.exe contained by PMD480_F.LZH.
You can extract files from LZH archives, using a kind of software named archive manager; two popular ones are 7-zip, which is free and I recommend; which you can download from here:
https://www.7-zip.org/download.html
And WinRAR, which can be permanently used for free, even past trial period, and whose download you can find from here:
https://www.win-rar.com/features.html
The procedures to setup Professional Music Driver are as follows:
- Download PMD480.LZH from this link:
http://www5.airnet.ne.jp/kajapon/dat/PMD48O.LZH
- Create a new folder
- Extract the files from PMD480.LZH using an archive manager, in the folder you previously crated
- Download PMD480_F.LZH from this link:
http://www5.airnet.ne.jp/kajapon/dat/PMD48O_F.LZH
- Extract the contents of PMD480_F.LZH using an archive manager, in the same folder you previously created; overwrite all files if asked
Done! Though as these are made to work only from MS-DOS supported operative systems, you need an MS-DOS emulator to run them, a popular one is named DOSBox, which you can download from here:
https://www.dosbox.com/download.php?main=1
And on it, navigating to the folder you previously created, putting or creating an MML text music source file on it, and using the following command for it to convert your MML text music source file to PC-X8's music files, with .M extension:
MC.EXE /v mmlfile.mml
mmlfile.mml being the name of the MML text music source file you want to convert; it can have any other name, but in MS-DOS environments, try to keep them 8 characters maximum, besides extension; if it's larger, most MS-DOS environments will truncate the filename appending a ~ symbol and a number following it.
You can then playback your .M music files with the following command:
PMP.EXE music.m
music.m, being any filename of the .M music file you want to playback.
An alternative workspace setup, for Windows of both 32 (X86) and 64 bits (X64) versions, is as follow:
- Download PMDFileWatcher, from here:
https://github.com/rerrahkr/PMDFileWatcher/releases/download/v1.2.0/PMDFileWatcher-v1.2.0.zip
- Create a new folder
- Extract the contents of the PMDFileWatcher-v1.2.0.zip archive using an archive manager, in the folder you previously created
- Download MS-DOS Player from the following link:
http://takeda-toshiya.my.coocan.jp/msdos/msdos.zip
- Extract the file inside the msdos.zip archive, using an archive manager, named msdos.exe; which is found in the folders msdos\source\binary\i486_x86\ inside it, in the folder you previously created
- Open PMDFileWatcher.exe, which is found in the folder you created earlier
- Click on the tab "File(F)" and "Settings(E)..." from it's dropdown menu
- Activate the checkbox labeled as Use MS-DOS Player, click the button labeled as "..." near it, and select the file msdos.exe, which is on the foldee you created earlier
- In the MC field, click the button labeled as "..." near it, and select the file MC.EXE, which is in the folder you created in the previous guide
- In the Options field, type /v
- Click on the Play tab
- Setup the FMPMD2000 player to listen to PC-X8's .m and .m2 music files, by using the following guide:
http://battleofthebits.com/lyceum/View/FMPMD2000
- On the Player field, press the button labeled as "..." near it, and select the file named FMPMDE.EXE you had setup in the guide provided on the previous step
- Click the button labeled as "Save"
- On the Target MML field, click on the button labeled as "..." near it, and select the MML file you want to convert; it's name, extension aside, must be of 8 characters or less
- Click on the tab File(E), and on the option "Compile(C)", from it's dropdown menu, and done! The MML file you provided should be playing back!
You may also make the program automatically compile and playback your MML file, each time you save it, by following this additional step:
- Click on the tab "Monitoring(M)", and on the option "Start(M)" from it's dropdown menu
If you have any question, or would like more detailed explanation on any step, or other matter, please ask right away! Cheers!
