while game jams are suddenly a reason to hype about, why not trying out a html5 demo jam? they can be real amazing; as i could see from pouet's javascript/php prods:

http://www.pouet.net/prodlist.php?order=thumbup&type%5B%5D=demo&platform%5B%5D=JavaScript&platform%5B%5D=PHP&page=1

as evidenced early my game developing skills are lacking BUT a compo about making pretty effects could be something i definitely would hype and participate for =' 3

not just HTML5, but potentially any format. :)

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH!

HTML5 could be particularly fun format wise as a start, as there are plenty of good options that are easy to get into. Tic80/Pico8 are some that come to mind, and there are plenty of other was to do things with JS.

Maybe a shadertoy compo?

A demo jam sounds like a ton of fun. I'd be down.

I'm all for it. However, the amount of time that is necessary to create a decent demo is not to be underestimated. Ye average oldschool platform demo commonly takes around 3-6 months to complete, and often more than that. Things move a bit faster in the newschool world (especially with shadertoy and stuff), but even on PC it can easily take several months to make something noteworthy.

So, if botb wants to establish itself as a respectable demoscene place, then we shouldn't restrict ourselves to quick "jams". I mean it's entirely possible to code some neat fx in 24h, but it'll hardly be noteworthy to the demoscene.

Imo demo battles should either 1) have a very long entry period, say 90 days or more, or 2) be announced a couple of month before the actual compo run.

I distinctly remember miau and ui (and possibly bknox?) making two NES demos that announced Winterchip and were fun to watch even though they didn't offer much in terms of technical awesomeness that other retro platform demos show.

So, I don't think BotB needs to establish itself as a respectable demoscene place. In fact I think it could potentially fare better by just declaring its demo compos as "quick'n'dirty" or "just4fun" which welcomes beginners who maybe are just learning to make their first plasma or whatever.
Should it disallow demo veterans to join?(you know who you are) Absolutely not, go crazy!
Also restricting the compo to retro platforms may be a little harsh. as I don't think that a lot of the users here are well versed in programming them. In that case i would agree with you irrlicht project: One would need quite a bit of time to make anything worth presenting.

I dunno, on the one hand quick battles seem to work well on here, and generally seem to end up with a higher entries/runtime ratio than long ones like Decadent Decade.

On the other hand it would be nice to lure a few more people from the demoscene to this site. And I think just quick shadertoy battles aren't exactly the best option for that.

So maybe we can have both? Time-restricted Shadertoy battles (perhaps implented as pit fights) and more serious demo compos that are announced well in advance?

i though about html5 first because is the format most botbr know for this purpose; i think someone has to do a liceum article first about programing for other hardware from n00b if you want most other botbr me included to participate as well

I definitely agree with irrlicht on the differentiation between a quick battle and an actual compo.

Maybe that'll serve as a means to generate some interest first (at least, from local denizens)? Have a couple of quick battles first to show that some effects are indeed achievable by mortals?
