schismtracker.org had a suite of "player abuse tests" that tests playback compatibility with impulse tracker, but most of those tests were administered back in 2009. in the interest of getting an up-to-date profile and knowing which players/libraries to prioritize for testing: what do you use to play .it modules?

For reference:

winamp, timidity → mikmod forks
vlc, ffmpeg → libmodplug
schism, openmpt → so far diverged from libmodplug, notably because of the fact that these two aren't utter shit and libmodplug *is*, that they should not be lumped into the libmodplug category
foobar2000 → fairly heavily modified dumb fork
xmp → completely unrelated to xmplay, do not conflate these two

xmplay better pass all the tests since it has claimed "balls on accuracy" for over 10 years

winamp playback is not perfect; has it's own interpreter; there were some hilarious bugs in early '00s versions -- especially when you start stacking internal pattern loops

"foobar2000 → fairly heavily modified dumb fork" —GreaseMonkey

ok, didn't know that. i had been lumping foobar2k in with dumb, but it sounds like they should be tested separately.

"xmplay better pass all the tests since it has claimed "balls on accuracy" for over 10 years" —Baron Knoxburry

it failed at least one of the tests last time around, but i'd guess that was about 7 years ago. also i never understood what "balls-on" was supposed to mean in terms of accuracy anyway

in any case these tests are by no means comprehensive; they just test some of the weird cases that sloppy playback libraries are likely to handle incorrectly. a good practice here (and in software development in general) would be to add a new test module to the suite every time we encounter a playback bug.

edit:

"winamp playback is not perfect; has it's own interpreter; there were some hilarious bugs in early '00s versions -- especially when you start stacking internal pattern loops" —Baron Knoxburry

yeah, tests 10 and 11
are devious in that respect.

renoise! that is probably not a good idea

edit: before posting this i searched in the renoise forums etc to see what the general state of compatibility was. the threads were a few years dated but the consenus seemed to be that renoise was merely meant to load DOS module data correctly, and not to play it back in a compatible matter. also a couple of users suggested using milkytracker for IT playback instead lol

audacious → libmodplug by default, but there is a plugin which lets it use dumb
xmms → libmikmod, there's a libmodplug plugin available though

@iYamWhatIYam – milkytracker can sort-of load IT modules, but it certainly doesn't make any effort to replay them accurately. this is fine because milkytracker is an XM tracker, not an IT tracker. interchangeability between the formats seems to be a common misconception.

edit: audacious also uses libmodplug. iamgreaser already pointed this out.

and there's finally a new release of schism: https://github.com/schismtracker/schismtracker/releases
