rambling comments:
I think live events are necessary and can be quite awesome.
The turnout for Ann Arbor I & III were great. Especially III, we had 197 at the door for a Blind Pig event. However, there was lots of promotion, mags, news articles, flyers, WCBN, Michigan Public Radio. Remember , it was before the BOTB site existed. In fact, the headline of the "Current" article gave us the BOTB name. Also A2 III was a Friday night and all entries were played. That in it self brought peeps and theirs friends. U-M is over 40,000 students from around the world and we really haven't tried to get into their music/progrmming schools , same w/ WCC. There's got to be hundreds (thousands?) of producers/programmers we haven't touched yet.
I completely agree with Langel about having more compos based in other cities. It's too easy NOT to do. And part of the BOTB mission (argubably) is to get our anti-social asses away from the monitor and be social.
Selector's point is also very valid. when selecting a playback/rewards show think smaller/intimate. Maybe even avant coffee houses or small art spaces. The smaller the place the more packed it seems and the greater the social interactions/music making potential collaborations.
Maybe we need to get marketing/promotion interns from marketing school at U-M (FREE LABOR!) I'll make a call to see what the qualifications for a certified intern program for U-M are.
