I've been tinkering here and there on making BotB media players that utitlized the thml5 audio element. My primary motivation is being able to listen to BotB playlists in my car from my phone. It's been slow going.

If you go into your settings on the BotB homepage you can opt-in for the html5 player. This has only been implemented for single entry playback so far. There are still some issues :

Chrome win7 : trying to seek resets the track to the beginning
Chrome OSX : seeking breaks playback
Firefox win7 : length of track or length of seconds is incorrect
Safari OSX : play progress bar / seeking missing
Opera win7 : LOL
iOS : apparently, media files must be properly chunked by the server for crappy buffering reasons

Works appropriately on :
Safari win7
Firefox OSX

Like I said, the long term goal is to completely replace all media players on the site. I don't know when that will happen. I had no idea that the html5 standard was so fucky across browsers.

Had a solid breakthrough by introducing some code to chunk media files if a certain request header is detected. I left my work mac work cornputer at work for the weekend so I can't test OSX browsers. Status update!

Safari/Chrome iOS : added a big PLAY link/div/what_have_you because iOS blocks instantly streaming media on a page load / must be user induced; also seeking is nonresponsive; also a severe lag before media starts playing liek 5 seconds and shit

Chrome win7: performing nominally
Firefox win7: ditto
Safari win7: proof that tracking the buffering/loading of media under the progress bar :: clicking on progress bar beyond what is loaded restarts media play (the other two could be doing this too I realize T__T)
Opera Win7: LOL

Now I will drink IPA's and eat tacos at my favorite diner. :D/

It seems to be working great in Chrome, just as you said... however there isn't a length of track thingy. (using version 45.0.2454.85) Dunno if it's not implemented or this is a bug.

- replaced the missing total track length x:xx / x:xx style

- discovered why firefox was having wonky time data; the entry [ http://battleofthebits.com/player/Entry/18980/ ] I was testing with was 48kHz LOOOOOOOL (still played better than older versions of flash)

multi-track playback on html5 enabled mode will be borked for now
I didn't get as far as I wanted tonight
but if you are opted in for the html5_player here is a JSON based playlist instead of the XML crap : http://battleofthebits.com/player/Playlist

I've been using the HTML5 player since it's been announced, and it's been great so far.

My only problem right now is that all tracks glitch at the beginning, until enough data arrives (usually 2~5 seconds). Doing a small pause before the track begins, waiting a couple a seconds, and then hitting play seems to work.

I'm on Firefox beta channel, Win 7 64bits.

Long time no update! Finally got the html5 player working with playlists. Still needs a lot of work, but a playlist will play with html5 all the way through until it die.

- still need a way to view the playlist while playing
- still need to handle the radio in it's own way

Some parts of the Botb media players are broken. if this new HTML5 player doesn't get fixed and improved, I am gonna sign out of Botb for a little while until all the problems with the new HTML5 player get sorted out.
But don't worry, i'm not gonna be gone forever, i'm just gonna take a break from all this nonsense i'm getting from the new and broken HTML5 player.
So far, the only thing thats wrong here is that the Botb radio is completely blank. I just get the audio and no user interface.
Anyway, I'll be spending my time making a comeback at Chipmusic.org. I haven't uploaded any songs at that place for a long time, so expect a new song from me when the time comes.
Maybe I'll upload another entry to Botb and give it another try (possibly for another OHB or the FM synth compo)

The post was intended to be constructive criticism. I think this site is great, and I want it to be as glitch proof as possible.

you're not a true botbr unless you embrace the glitchiness of botb as its always been. i respect your passion but that was a kind of a dick thing to write for something you likely never donated toward and surely never paid a dime in subscription fees.

slow your role and apologize to the man, sir. :)
