About
The eXtended Module file format (.xm) is a file format first introduced in
FastTracker II. It features sampled audio tracking similar to that of other trackers of the time, but uniquely featured a new feature in the form of the eXtended Instrument (.xi), which allowed you to map multiple samples to each instrument, setting a standard for future trackers/formats.
While many prefer the
Impulse Tracker .it format due to its compression and more advanced editing, .xm remains popular due to its
effects commands.
Specifications
The .xm format typically allows for a maximum of 32 channels and 128 instruments. Each instrument can have up to 16 samples. However, depending on the system it runs on, the number of channels is theoretically infinite.
