On the evening of October the 21st 1827, Schubitz wrote his mother for what would be the final time. "The visions came again this morning. What was contained therein -- I shall not write nor speak it, not to any living soul. This burden I bear will go with me to God. It can only be hoped that I can be forgiven."
Working feverishly over the course of that week, Schubitz finished his Op. 56, a piece that would become a point of scholarly contention for years. Many historical musicologists consider Op. 56 to be highly unusual for his late period, containing several sections that were so uncharacteristic of his music that they were speculated to have been added by another hand. However no records exist of any visitors to the small cottage near Leipzig, and Schubitz was known to avoid any contact with the outside world.
