.it sauce: http://static.angryscience.net/pub/music/xaser%20-%20aurora%20surrealis.it

also, here's a shorter looped version (strictly unofficial for voting purposes), for folks who dig the prime groove: http://static.angryscience.net/pub/music/xaser%20-%20aurora%20surrealis.spc

As mentioned by the uber-descriptive description (heh) up there, the echo effect is used to inject some sick reverb. Seriously, listen to the .it and then the .spc if you can't tell at first -- it makes a universe of difference.

i absolutely love this (however it sounds like arse in spcplay for some reason, what interpoliation option did you use?)

Turn interpolation off for best quality. Probably should've mentioned that in the description. P:

Sounds just fine in SPCPlay to me (with interp off, ofc.), though the .mp3 render was done with in_spc.dll (via XMPlay). Should I reupload an SPCPlay-render for officialness's sake, or does it really matter? They sound pretty comparable.

It sounds just fine with the SNES gauss filtering to me (which is how I listened to it).

Personally, I think you should render this with the gauss filtering enabled so that it's more true to the actual hardware, but leave the module there in the description so people can still hear it without, if they wish. (Like I said, I thought it still sounded great despite the filtering! I don't think it'd affect the votes.)

edit: It seems that the thing that suffers the most with the filtering is the effect that plays on channel 8 at the very beginning (the "hissy-hogger" sample). The filtering could be alleviated by upsampling but there's a limit to how closely you can match the non-interpolated version (plus you'd have to worry about increasing the amount of space used)... alternatively, you might be able to get away with using SPC Noise instead of the sample you used, since gauss filtering doesn't apply to noise.

i didn't notice anything bad when listening to it in spcplay. of course it'll never be the same quality as the .it source but that's just the nature of snes

Maximum-argh. The SNES Gauss table makes it sounds like absolute dogshit. 6_9

I won't be replacing the render, but folks that care about the accuracy are going to be playing the .spc itself -- if it sounds okay to folks' ears in such a case, then hooray I suppose, but if it doesn't then the votes will fall accordingly. I suppose for some folk, the answer is going to be "no", because seriously, yuck. D:

re:SPC Noise, I don't think SNESMod supports this. If so, it's either undocumented or my version's out of date.

the .it file seems small enough, definitely small enough for the "hissy-hogger" sample to be upsampled if you're up for that task, however another problem could be the frequency range itself

snesmod is faulty in that the samples come out too muddy in the conversion, i think this wouldn't be as noticeable if you used another tool (like snesmod AMK or superc).

again, though, barring that small issue, this is a great song ^o^

The filesize is just barely below the mark; when you actually run it through snesmod, the resulting data is 57890 bytes (out of 58000 max), so that's not an option unfortunately. I appreciate the help though!

@Xaser: The version posted here has noise and pitch modulation. Select the PitchMod driver (59123 bytes max) or SuperSNESMod (58663 bytes max). I believe the size of volume envelopes is calculated incorrectly. If you use a lot of volume envelopes with many nodes the available RAM reported could be off by as much as 700 bytes. This is an issue leftover from the original SNESMod driver.

Heh, I've got a personal list of grievances with modern EDM too -- I suppose if that's bleeding through, that's a good thing. :P

@AugustusBlkheart: Apologies for not actually responding, but super-thanks for the SNESMOD update! It works way better from some initial tinkering, so I'm absolutely using it for the next one of these. Will hopefully be Gauss-friendlier too. :P

Cool, yeah let me know of any bugs or annoyances. I hope to have another sound driver added soon. I also need to look into fixing volume handling but I'm not sure how much effort that will take yet.
