i LOVE this entry but i am so confused by the rainstorm sfx. i had no idea MT32 had any sfx, so i went on a deep dive trying to figure it out

... and, well, i haven't figured it out! there was nothing in the patch list, so first i just tried thumbing through the outer ranged notes of the rhythm channel to see if there was a batch of sfx i didn't know about. really i'd never looked at the lowest and highest ones, so that seemed possible. no dice

so i decided to open your midi in FL - it is not good at importing midis but i wanted to see where the rain was coming from. it is a G-8 note on your rhythm channel, sure enough, so i thought "ah, must've missed it". but that note just doesn't produce sound for me, either in MuntVsti or Munt itself. playing your midi through Munt, i don't hear the rain either!

so THEN i thought "ok, maybe you have to pull some CC# or SysEx stuff to access those sounds"... and that still might be a possibility, there's a "rhythm setup area" in the "parameter address map" in the manual, but that's way above my pay grade. but in the process of looking through the MT32 owner's manual, i found a list of the rhythm channel instruments, and there's not anything listed above the claves...

... so how did you do this !? !? i would love to be able to use this and/or other sfx in this format, but i just cannot find a single piece of info about it. thanks for your time, sorry for the incredibly long post.

I set up the song in OpenMPT, mapping the Midi out to the mt32 emulator with Munt running. The rain fx were just the G8 note on percussion as you saw, and the G#8 for thunder (slipped those in with the drums to keep the rain fx running continually). I'm not sure that I did anything special beyond that, so now I'm wondering if I just accidentally did something wrong by not knowing WTH I'm doing lol!! Will send you the source...I wish I had done some cool complex thing that I could brag about, but alas, no!

I like the mood, MT-32 Rulez. The chords at the beginning along with the rain really completes this entry!

Thanks for the comments! So after looking into this, I found out that the rain/thunder fx I used are actually not part of original MT-32, but instead part of the CM32L which is based on MT32, and I had been using the wrong ROMs in Munt which is why I was able to access it. Wah.

CM32L
is "based on MT-32 but it contains an expanded PCM memory capacity which is two and a half times larger than that of the MT32", and includes the added fx in the percussion, so apart from that everything should be good here. Thanks so much to Damifortune for helping me figure this out! Will make sure I'm not using any expanded stuff in the format going forward.
