I'm really not much of a graphxicist, but:
1) I didn't want to miss out on the first day of Advent, and
2) I find drawing simple geometric pictures in Inkscape kind of soothing.
I thought for a while about whether there was an aesthetically pleasing way to fit the actual words "Advent Calendar" into this design, but ultimately decided on the minimal approach.
