This blog series ( http://www.dubbhism.com/2010/06/tao-of-fm-synthesis-1-musical.html ) describes how FM synthesis is poorly cast as difficult and painful, when it is in fact easy to create organic sounds. It also compares FM synthesis technique to choking someone.

Am I doing it right?

Thanks to several helpers in #botb in getting the tremolos working, it is the key to these sounds.

Also, Genesis/Megadrive with FM and sampled drums only, no PSG.

Awesome.
FM Synthesis is not difficult at all until you get into certain complex 6-OP (or more) algorithms...then it gets a little cumbersome to really understand what's going on. Anyway, I love FM synthesis so much. It really is the most organic-sounding form of digital sound generation IMO. It's what I started with back in the early 90s with a Yamaha DX7-IIFD!
