Thanks you guys!
_gyms_ Hi! I don't know those goldbaby things, but if they sound like this, I would probably like it!
My usual signal chain for this type of drum recording is: stereo pair of cheap $10 Walmart karaoke mics -> pair of ART Tube MP's cranked to get just a little tube distortion -> Yamaha MT100 4-track -> ART TPS2 preamp -> Audio interface -> Logic -> Slate Digital Virtual Mix Rack with CS Lift, Neve 1073, and 1176 compressor -> UA Pultec Pro EQ -> Slate Digital Virtual Tape Machine.
Yeah it's a lot of work, but the results are worth it!

moot goldbaby is this studio that samples a lot of classic drum machines with really good gear and the samples are high quality and full of character. I thought they also had a few funky acoustic sample packs too but I suppose I was thinking of another studio cos I couldn't find any funky packs at the goldbaby site

sweet signal chain btw. that slate stuff is cool, I usually just use the digital consoles

I will have to check that out! Some nicer quality samples of certain machines would be really useful.
And thanks! The Slate plugins really changed the sound quality of my mixes. Surprisingly I've still not experimented with putting tape sims on every track and trying to simulate a real 16-track machine. It makes renders take foreverrrrrrrrrr but it's usually worth it! I mostly just put it on the drum bus and then as the last thing in my mastering chain.

man you should definitely try out those slate digital consoles too! they add an almost invisible amount of the saturation/compression/tone modeled from various console's channel outputs. you choose between like the SSL desks, Neve, Trident, etc. it adds an overall touch of character to the mix that definitely goes missing when you bypass it.

another really cool detail they got right was the L and R channels saturate and compress independently before being summed back again(dual mono, like how the actual consoles did it). the result is really nice, esp when you drive it a bit. super cpu efficient too, so you can slap it on every channel and then the stereo bus as intended without a cpu hit or a render that takes forever

It's crazy man, I have everything Slate makes with their subscription service, and have yet to try those out. I will have to remedy that!

damn i can't wait to squash the hell out of these bad boys! You guys need to check out the Airwindows plugins! I swear by these and they are free. Some of his latest plugins have been really amazing as far as console and tape emulation goes.
