I haven’t been on BotB very long, but out of all the majors I’ve been in, Match Mayhem was definitely the most fun I’ve had. I think the battles that relate to “constructing a soundtrack for a fictional game” is probably the coolest type of battle I’ve seen. I want more of those! So, here’s an idea: a BotB Battle that prompts you to write racing game music! Specifically, retro racing music, or music inspired by the Mario Kart games. (Or other retro racing games like Outrun, Metropolis Street Racer, Sonic-R, Ridge Racer etc.)

Racing games have some of the coolest music, and some great variety. Really, as long as the song is quick and upbeat, it could fit somewhere in a racing game. This battle could present a really good opportunity for beginners, considering the prompt is pretty easy to work with, but allows experts to really show if they’re skill, not restricted by difficult “bitpacks.”

With a battle like this, you can write in many styles, jazz, funk, fusion, rock, DnB, Techno, really anything you want. All in all a very versatile battle idea in my opinion. I’d love to see collaboration, perhaps some people take on the role of composing menu themes while others do track themes, or just people collaborating on single compositions.

Potential Rules:
Music must loop (potentially make one iteration of the loop faster and in a higher key like in Mario Kart.)
Music must be a certain BPM? (110/120 minimum or something?) just to avoid slow songs that don’t fit the prompt.

Voting Categories:

Speed
Chaos
Burning Rubber
Final Lap (encourages composers to add a repeat of their loop, faster and in a higher key, like in Mario Kart.)

helllllll yeah let's do it

i think just "racing game music" is good and clear enough as a prompt without any additional rules

i mean maybe someone wants to make music that "sounds like you just got 5th-8th place in mario kart" that way, but that also feeds into what you were saying about constructing a soundtrack for a fictional game

@damifortune i do really think the final lap idea is crucial here though, one of my favorite things about match mayhem was how the music looped and on the final loop it got really fast and overwhelming.

Well, frick, this was essentially my idea too haha, definitely voting for this.

Would other genres associated with racing such as eurobeat and drift phonk work as well, or just racing game music?

@mikaboshii
nah, i think the goal is like actual racing game music inspired by some of the games in the description. mariokart etc...
we could totally do a phonk battle tho!

i like the idea of doing even more with a final lap loop, like adding or dropping instruments, changing from swung to straight (or the other way around), something like that

A fun aspect of this idea is that you will be listening to your very own final-lap music while on your very own final lap in the battle.

This is my favorite style-pastiche prompt that's been suggested, and I agree that "make the final lap more urgent somehow" is a great twist.

Hey @NardInYourYard. I made some fanart of the cover of the battle, but I don't know how to share it with you.
