Another Adventure -- Part 2

  51st/251   Σ27.083   Jan 25th 2016 11:57am

THE LONG AWAITED SEQUEL TO THE... erm... nevermind.

Again, thanks to the amazing Sam Winton (aka amphobius) and Harumi for helping me out with this, and shout-outs to Cohones!

...7) Lightheartedness' Demise -- Continuing from the previous part :: 0:00 - 00:21
8) Bland Adventures :: 0:21 - 1:03
9) The unwanted ressurection of happiness :: 1:03 - 2:13
10) Daily Arguments :: 2:13 - 3:09
11) One Final Argument :: 3:09 - 4:20
12) The E... oops, out of ARAM space! :: 4:20 - ???

Believe it or not, it wasn't that I only had limited musical inspirations or time, but the damn 64kb ARAM limit this time around! Grumble grumble...

That being said, I'll try to submit Part 3 as a wildchip in this compo. I do want to make it, and after that, it's back to my usual "try entering every format", or "I have no time I need to work stuff"

I won't do the "Time taken" stuff this time because I don't have the patience to calculate all of it, especially since I didn't do it for consecutive days either.

Samples source (Whoever is streaming may skip over this):
Hand-Made (Chippy samples)
Generated with MilkyTracker (Saw, Sine, Triangle, Noise)
Final Fantasy (Oboe, Flute, Bagpipe)
Mega Man X (Lead Guitar)
909 Drumkit (Bassdrum and Snaredrum and hi-hat)
Harmor (Bass)
Alesis D4 Pack (The more realistic sounding drums)
I still don't know where the string is from, though.
The sine fifths... um... Sytrus?

Anyway, Expect part 3 soon. Sorry for being a fuckass and not being able to fit it all in one big SPC, but I didn't expect it to get so big.

IT Source in the comments.

If you're feeling really gutsy, you can cut down on some of the quiet stuff on two of the samples to give you a few extra bytes (hh03 and Snr18-Standard38).

While I could cut some of the samples down for bytes, it wouldn't help, since the pattern data also adds up, and after a certain point it would glitch samples; atleast that's what I've experienced.

This is pretty well made tracker wise. What it feels like, and I can probably say this of my own work as well, is that youre getting more proficient in trackers, instruments and effects, but maybe not as much progress on interesting melody lines and interactions of notes. For instance, theres a lot of melody lines where it only moves from one note to the next with either one tone or one semitone of difference, and the variance in pitch intervals could do with more ... risk? As I've said, I notice this in my own work too, so more saying it for the benefit of your future works :)

I have decided to take a look at your pattern data to see if perhaps you could optimize the pattern data somewhat. I have a few tricks to cut down on pattern data size, including...

- Using channel volume for most of the notes in a pattern to substitute for a series of matching volume commands (I set them back at the last possible note)

- Cutting the length in half while doubling the speed when rows are not being used (not always recommended with some effects playing)

- Looking for pattern segments that are exact duplicate of other segments (as long as they are at least 32 rows, which on my end is an Impulse Tracker limitation) and making them their own unique pattern that gets cued as needed (while the previous patterns also get a reduced length due to said duplicate being cut from the pattern)

- Creating extra instruments to substitute for volume effects done in patterns (as long as it is repeatedly being used... otherwise, the file-saving benefits go away).

Your source .it file looks like the pattern data could be optimized if you're up for it.

It's kind of too late considering Part 2 is already out and done, but I will keep it in mind if I do make any future SPC's.

I've recently upgraded to Windows 8.1, so things are a little wanky as of right now, but I've got most things up and running, so Part 3 will still happen!

THE FUTURE:

After part 3 is done and sliced togheter accurately, I'll put this up on both soundcloud and youtube as one gigantic song (with all the parts put in, of course), which you can download. I'm also thinking on putting it on bandcamp as "Name your price" with a no minimum.

After all that's dealt with, I'll return to what I do normally. I'm busy with other things, so I will not go crazy and try to submit to every format like I did in Winter Chip X. I'll still try though don't judge me kthx

":D was that the earthbound gameover bit at the beginning?"

no, it's actually a fade-in from the last part in part 1. i never knew that earthbound had a gameover like that (but then again i never really played earthbound)

"this is like five different songs in a row so i'm not sure how to really comment on them (or the previous entry to this). they transition well but they sound kind of similar to eachother and i'm not sure how they aid the overall structure or narrative, if at all; the sections *themselves* are good, but it feels more like you made a dj set out of them than a whole composition. that said it'd make a pretty good dj set~"

it's kind of tough to comment on any song that has 2 or more "parts" chained together, so i can see where you're coming from
i agree that they sound similar to each other too, but don't all my entries sound similar in some way or another
