Alternative Tunings

Aren't you tired of the same 12 notes? Wouldn't you like to leave the comfort zone far behind? And put sounds together that you've never* put together before? Well come on in and join us for some xen meditation. Anything goes, from equal divisions of the octave, equal divisions of other intervals, just intonation, or any other temperament you can think of - except for the standard 12-EDO.

All I ask is that you specify which tuning system you used in the description of your entry. Other than that, go crazy. (Also, while you can technically say you're on 24-EDO, 36-EDO, or other multiples-of-12-EDO and make a standard 12-EDO tune, I'll consider it going against the "spirit" of the rules of the competition.)

- Format -

mptm, allgear (is there any other mixist format that can be here)

- Voting categories -

microtonicity • xenharmoniousness • temperament • the good strange • cents in pants

This could be an interesting idea. Any specific format(s) in mind? I'd assume either allgear or wildchip or something in that avenue.

I forgot to add formats so I added the 2 most obvious ones for this kind of battle, .mptm and allgear. I'm not sure what else can be thrown at this, I guess MIDI is feasible thanks to jangler's faunatone, and I don't know how well musescore plays with other tunings because I've never explored it.

and I mean, you can technically throw fakebit in as a "wildchip that gives mixist points", lol. Or if that's not actually a real constraint of this battle and these battles can have any format at all, then just add the real wildchip

EDIT: Wait, MIDI is Chipist? lol I forgot. then I guess MIDI can apply if wildchip can apply

i'd like to mention that the snes wields microtonality, too! check out docs c700 microtunable fork!

pxtone also allows it!
atleast via ptcollab, you can 'snap' the standard tuning in half (24edo) or in thirds (36edo), or.... you can disable snapping entirely and go freeform.
i do wonder if there's a way to enforce other tuning systems on it though

@sean you can toggle an option in settings to enable alternative tunings, enabling Y snap settings for 1-36edo. you can even quantize notes to the chosen snap setting!

that said, i would personally support this most as an allgear for maximum accessibility in a challenging battle

pxtone could work out if this is a Mixist-only battle, but that's also one format I've never done before lol

and yeah, tbh I envisioned this battle to be allgear but honestly it could be open to other formats in addition to allgear just to make things a bit fair

i'm surprised it's only taken until now for someone to suggest this. that said, i would be down to learn some xenharmonics for this, been meaning to for a while now

can't lie that cover art is cooking
peak

also
as a tracker main (101% real), is it possible to do mircotonality in trackers (like openmpt, furnace, renoise, sunvox etc)
just curious

OpenMPT does allow for alternative tunings, I've tested it a little bit. I know there are people who've managed to use SunVox with microtonality but from what I know it's kinda hacky.

As far as Furnace is concerned, it's the same as with, say, Famitracker: using pitch effects and knowing what value to use with them.

With many trackers you can use finetuning commands. Theoretically that could work, although it’d be more complicated.

Sample trackers could also provide for fixed odd tunings with adjusted lengths of looped samples or retuned note samples for each note of the instrument’s octave. Memory-heavy (especially because looped samples would need to be high-rez enough to tune finely; 4-sample loops would largely not work)

“Just” tunings etc. with scale degrees adjusting to roots could be achieved with more of the above instruments or adjustments where needed for excursions out of key. Fixed but non-edo tunings like the famous well-temperament would work very well because you could set and forget. The Well-Tempered Home Computer?

surprised no one has mentioned klangfreude yet, you can literally put in any pitch you want

I suppose if you want to use a specfic tuning system, it is kinda annoying having to put in the exact pitches, but I think not having restrictions like that is part of the fun

@lumby it did actually show up in future battles 2 but i hope there will be renewed interest in it this time, it would be an awesome battle theme
