i hope you all enjoy this bitpack and battle! i really appreciate everyone sticking with this series for so long. :D

it's scheduled to run until advent calendar starts, and the OHB weekly will be on hiatus until 2023 due to both of those things

oh ALSO voting categories aren't set in stone yet, recommendations are welcome! first two will probably be YEA | VIDEOGAME we have voting categories now thank you \o/

edit: *also* if you're looking to try out the SNES format, i've written a big comprehensive guide on how to do it: https://samplemance.rs/snesguide you can do it! don't be afraid!

im usually extension averse but i got a little thing going and i would like to embiggen it or at the very least close it off (without resorting to cheap loop/loop/fade scenario, although given the compo's VGM-theme, that would be kind of on topic)

if no extendorz i can save it/shelve it for winter chip if snes is going to be a format in that one and hope for the best

I no-showed for YEA VIDEOGAME due to lack of interest with wrangling with either the sample pack or digging out the corresponding BRR files from the original games and extracting their tuning info. Instead, I decided to work on developing my own sound driver. The music player is up and running, though it could use some ironing out timing-wise and consumption-wise.

hey folks!

i have added 3 WEEKS to the voting period

that's a really long time, but the following Sunday would've been Christmas, and the Sunday after that, New Year's Day. so we'll be looking at results+stream on January 8th

(technically that's at the end of magfest too but whatever, we will make it happen!)

happy vorting!

I have a question, are these the original samples that have been ripped from the SNES games?
Doesn't this violate the rights of the companies that own those games?

Well if you think about it, the game companies recorded samples from synthesizers and sound modules from other companies like Korg, Roland, Yamaha, etc. so it wasn't technically their sounds in the first place.

Probably don't have copyright on their samples either...

Very interesting. I reckon bravoman’s totally correct.

==========WARNING==========
======LONG POST INCOMING======

*** TLDR: ***
It doesn’t violate any copyright of the game developers, they didn’t hold any rights to the sounds. It doesn’t violate any copyright of the synth manufacturers as we’re not resampling the hardware they manufactured. It doesn’t violate the copyright of the composers, because the composition is the *arrangement* of sounds, not the sounds that are arranged.

***DISCLAIMER***
At this point i’ll deploy one of the more entertaining acronyms out there, I Am Not A Lawyer, or "I-ANAL" in abbreviation

*** OK HERE WE GO ***
wellackshully,

If the synths in question were exclusively analogue, the game companies’ sampling their output would be fine. But resampling rompler-based synthesizer sounds in isolation is technically against copyright. The samples are only able to be used without legal limitation when combined in a composition. As an example, if the game companies included the music their copmposers composed in their games in the form of a single mixed down track, that would be entirely legal. Also obviously impossible due to the size limitations of the medium.

Essentially, the technique used to create music in video games while optimising space by digitising single instances of those sounds and then playing back those instances in sequence, as opposed to playing recording of a sequence generated by the original hardware, is entirely illegal from the perspective of the manufacturers of the gear.

I do wonder whether the use was overlooked by music hardware manufacturers at the time because video games were a nascent industry, or whether manufacturers kind of gave the practice a pass because the limitations of the medium meant that was the only way video game sountracks could feature their sounds.

As for the usage here, I don’t think there’s anything that clearly protects it, specifically because we aren’t using, or even interested in using the original sounds of those synthesisers in their full fidelity. It doesn’t violate any license from the hardware makers because we’re not resampling the samples from their hardware. It doesn’t violate the copyright of the composers, because the sounds themselves aren’t the composition, their arrangement and sequence is.

Hey there!

Since the voting period was extended, I felt like bumping this thread to share some thoughts, not as damifortune, the host, but as an average participant. So, hopefully I'm not meddling.

For those who have voted or have been voting: thanks! There were a lot of super busy events lately, not to mention the holidays. So, your input during these hectic times is appreciated.

For those who still plan to vote (especially those with no entries): thanks for caring! It's always neat to have extra people show up and make these events more lively!

For those who do not plan to vote (especially those amongst the 55 contestants): personally, I think majors aren't just about submitting an entry and then moving on to the next thing. Imo, they're about seeing a lot of people all over the place, whether by casting votes, favoriting, commenting, tagging, reacting to posts or a little of each, not because it's an obligation, but because it's really fun to have this big, festive thing (and earn those extra points if you are into leveling up, hehe). Also, 83/84 entries to vote on can feel like too much at first, but if you vote on 5 a day, you'll be able to make it!

Still, if you have your own reasons to not vote, whichever they may be, no pressure!

Now, I should probably cast my own votes and such soon XD

i pushed it back the first time because more votes were very much needed and we were in the middle of Advent Calendar, which was not only taking up our collective focus but also our collective voting energy, so it simply made sense to extend. the extension was long because the following Sundays would've been Christmas and New Year's Day

puke pushed it back this time because the results stream would've fallen during MAGfest, which he has physically located himself within, and he wanted to be available during said results stream (especially since the php upgrade has been borking some things). it got pushed multiple weeks because of the other majors that are scheduled to close in adjacent weeks (Advent also moved forward one week)

sorry for the inconvenience! on the bright side, we are gaining more voters now, and i'm hoping turnout is even better! if we get 30+ like the big seasonals that would be awesome

thank you again everyone for helping to make this such a fun major!! it was a blast to host and to stream and i loved seeing what everyone came up with. what a great time

thanks to kleeder's score calculator tool, i have determined some cool stats:
- the average score of the main ohb series #1-84 is: 25.332
- the main series #1-84 comprises 768 entries
- including re-runs, snes format spinoffs, AND this major, the entire YEA VIDEOGAME series currently spans 1053 entries with an average score of 24.957

isn't that crazy/awesome/crazy awesome!? over a thousand super nintendo sample songs. i'm humbled. thanks so much for sticking with my series : )
