not entirely sure how to feel about two formats in a single format challenge. gonna update you during the month if my brain is able to handle it at some point

Aaaaaa finally a new major =) now let's see what format it is this time, it can't possibly be any worse than Channel F, now let me just take a sip of my tea while reading the format.

guess it's about time I get round to one of these monthly things. I think I said in my entry page that the format was non-size limited bytebeat but I'm perfectly okay with both, gonna be interesting to see how it divides up the entries

for non 1k-bytebeat gonna see if I can come up with better percussive models, and maybe do something else instead of all the time phase-modulation :p

did you know that the background image is based on this bytebeat: t 10 >> 42 * t *

i think?

@AArt1256 if you're talking about the cover art background image, it was generated with a simple js script I wrote and html canvas

the actual bytebeat functions for the rgb channels that were used to generate the image are:::

red:
((t / 100) >> (t / 10)) + (((t / 200) & 205) | (t / 20000));
green:
((t / 100) >> (t / 10)) + (((t / 200) & 205) | (t / 30000));
blue:
((t / 100) >> (t / 10)) + (((t / 200) & 205) | (t / 40000));

I wouldn't be able to make an image out of the function you provided since it's not a valid [infix] expression :p (now that I'm thinking about it, is this glitch or rpn?)

you can see a live version here (warning quick flashing lights!!!):::
https://argarak.github.io/visbeat/?r=KCh0IC8gMTAwKSA%2BPiAodCAvIDEwKSkgKyAoKCh0IC8gMjAwKSAmIDIwNSkgfCAodCAvIDIwMDAwKSk%3D&g=KCh0IC8gMTAwKSA%2BPiAodCAvIDEwKSkgKyAoKCh0IC8gMjAwKSAmIDIwNSkgfCAodCAvIDMwMDAwKSk%3D&b=KCh0IC8gMTAwKSA%2BPiAodCAvIDEwKSkgKyAoKCh0IC8gMjAwKSAmIDIwNSkgfCAodCAvIDQwMDAwKSk%3D&a=MjU1

(yeah that's base64 encoded js code there lol, not pretty but it seems to work)

Hey all, snooping around teh interwebs I uncovered this very well constructed guide to the writing of the Bytebeats:

https://nightmachines.tv/downloads/Bytebeats_Beginners_Guide_TTNM_v1-5.pdf

Or, you know, you can input random doo dahs and get a good boop beep going!

i know floatbeat isn't allowed but i like this floatbeat 4*sin(.00002*t)*sin(sin(t*.05)*.04*(sin(t*.02)+1))

I came up with a really simple waveshape synth you can use in your bytebeats that's easy to tune and has some interesting sounds.

here's an animation which shows how the waveshaping works: https://imgur.com/a/g4oom66

here's a simple example:
https://greggman.com/downloads/examples/html5bytebeat/html5bytebeat.html#t=0&e=0&s=8000&bb=5d000001003f0000000000000000331c88cecb12efcc3889412bde1f067ff0035029494ee553cf5acbe4cd41166af62e2d43e87b1fd2c980ccbf84137fd2946680075b65de2a3f5ca3b6a725f7fffcd9d780

for high values of the wave variable it sounds more squelchy, and you could use really really high values of wave for an interesting noise generator for hi-hats or other percussive things if you're sick of the random() white noise generator

you could even use a function to modulate the wave parameter there :p

can we submit stuff like this? or where should we submit? https://pastebin.com/raw/HbL3f3Hb (it's 2kb... :S - for sdlBasic running on GNU/Linux, having vgmtools installed )

if it's a generative vgm file like I think it is then you can submit to a chip format if the vgm is specifically for that one system's chip only (and vgm is a valid file for that format). for example the sn7 in the sms. or allgear/wildchip

bytebeat1k got removed to make it a REAL single format challenge and because of the lack of entries so far!
if u started an entry for it, you can keep it until winter chip. someone (beard7) told me, we will have byte1k in there !

kleeder: the initial idea of bytebeat was random sounds out of simple math equations but some people write full music engines in code form

opm: lol the format sounds like if you gave me a bunch of sticks of wood, and told me to build a house
Im sure someone can do it but not me xDDDD

I can't submit more than just one entry so here's another bytebeat that's cool:

play at 32KHz or 44KHz since they both sound cool

t/4&t/4 >>6 | t/4 >> 8

My sincere apologies for making you all listen to like 8 minutes of my entry on the stream.

I don't actually know how long it takes to loop so I just recorded it running until I got bored, I didn't know you were going to run the whole thing on stream! :P

(Maybe I'll make the next one half an hour >:D )
