Will the entries' MP3 renders be done through hardware or some sort of emulator (if so, PLEASE don't let it be Nestopia)?

You can render your own song to mp3 however you want. Or have someone render it for you. There's no reason why NTRQ entries should be rendered via emulation.

The first thing is to upload .SAV files, renders should be the less of the concerns, at least if they're done through emulation...despite of the emulation state of the 2a03 (rofl). I even question hardware recordings...

Good luck queers \o/

NTRQ uses the MMC1 mapper. Some MMC1 boards came with 8k of (optionally battery-backed) SRAM. In theory, a smaller chip can be used, but in the standard iNES header SRAM can only be added in 8k chunks. So 8k is the minimum and some emulators might rely on the .sav file being that exact size.

I was also wondering about people wanted to manipulate their track in live way. For gameboy entries the submissions have been directly .mp3 - so should people be able to record themselves using their .sav in this way?

What other emulators should be mentioned that adhere to the correct .sav file format?

Jnes seems to work right.
Exactly 8k, and loaded a random .SAV I got over in #botb from someone. I didn't know what emulator they used though, but probably not Jnes.

I think I'm the only one who's uploaded SAVs to BotB, I've checked the folders of others who I'd think could have uploaded something there...

I use a PowerPak with copies of the included blank SAVs as the save files. Maybe there is something with how they're saved? I think I've tried to load them into Nestopia and Nintendulator to no avail...does Nintendulator even support SAVs?

Anyway, I think Nintendulator, though power hungry, is what I'd recommend. It's one of the few emulators I know of that are still in development, and it seems to be the most accurate. But, like I said, I don't know whether it supports SAVs or not, I'm on another computer and I'm too lazy to wake up my chiptunin' machinooo.

Jnes and Nintendulator both work with the same .SAVs.
Also, doesn't Nestopia use ZIP to compress it's .SAVs?
I remember reading somewhere that one emulator did that [but if you unzipped it, inside was an ordinary 8k SAV].

Yes, that's Nestopia's behaviour, and yes you can unzip it to get the ordinary 8k .sav

Oh and hello, first post :D

I updated emulator info on the rules screen. Sorry I didn't fully do a proper NES emulator investigation prior to this Battle's launch. But that's what I got you GAIS 4!!!!!!

FCEUX added in battle info for linux users. Windows version saves 8k .sav files in the sav subdirectory. I don't see any reason why a *NIX would operate any different. ;D

i agree its not crap i actually am really enjoying learning how to use this its alot less frustrating then lsdj....and has anyone used tb5 ( http://www.morganleahrecords.com/mooglecharm/nes/TB5.zip ) that tracker is junk really so in comparison ntrq is like ableton live....and i really dont think there is any other native nes trackers out there....as for nestopia it does generate a .sav @8kb

I'll get back to working on this site someday... Funny, when it rains, it pours! ...with work that is.

hey jbuonacc, well botb have this "strange" system. And it goes like the feelings you have listening the track, so its kinda up to each person.

here is a little explain of how i see it...

heart-magic - the song have full of feelings/love. You just love it...
brain-tech - mad tracking/compose skills, like a robot from sky just did this perfect song!...
thumb-blister - the person who did this spend to much time doing it, non-stop composing session.
wow-tilt - like shocking... and dont know what to do... if stop/play/pause or leave it like that...
shit-in-pants - you just shit in yoru pants... play again plz...

if you think this is to dump/idiot/crazy system.. you jus can vote all equal, i mean.... like if you vote in one category a 4, them all the others can be 4. or something like that! :P

this is one of the funnies part of BOTB :D... about the language, yah, that's why i think many ppl dislike botb, but when they know botb well they love it till dead!... special if your around IRC.

hope that help you :D

I asked that question once in #botb (the "chat room"), and the answer I got was "interpret it any way you want to", and it seemed that a lot of people gave each category different meanings. But ui's explanation makes perfect sense. I think I'll use that interpretation for my first voting session with a major compo!

Also, what irony! I dis Renoise, hoping it got 4 entries. Now, a compo I like has it the record low of major compo participants.

Excuse any weird grammar, I just wish to get on with the votes. :P

@soiled, yah... about the low number of participants, i blame anewuser for that!... hahaha... not really, my opinion about this is more liek. It´s kinda bad the way to do tracks on emulators, unless you have a console or a powerpak with a real console running, will be a pain in the ass... and the limitation of the patterns dont help much. but that last sounds more like an excuse. The good thing, is the tracker had been tested for atleast 5 ppl in here! JAJAJ... and it have some nice features as well. Hopes we can have some NTRQ ohc´s, but i suppose we will have to way for the nsf export or just do the way we did those mario paint compos :´DDD

I think it's compos like these that make BotB great. We're learning new tools, broadening our skills, and trying to push the limits. I had a great time with this compo. If you don't like the compo, don't participate. If you don't like the software, don't use it. But please stop spamming the compo thread saying it all sucks.
