Well, it happens that if I add rhythm into almost-oldschool repetetive dungeonsynth track it starts to sound like very weird hiphop mutant subgenre that evolved after aeons of lurking in dark dungeons.
Which leads to a question - should there be some drums or not?

Also I see people submitting tracks with drums so it is probably okay :)
But i don't remember dungeonsynth from 90s having any drums in it though

I've found some older tracks with drums, but they're usually at the end of albums after listening to 30+ minutes of music which has some impact! But, yeah, I was worried people wouldn't study the genre enough if they didn't know it already. There are many modern tracks with percussion, but its often used very sparingly. Or totally washed out with reverb (dry 0% / wet 100%). I think drums can be fine, but dance/rock beats are definitely too much in the tradition of the genre.

I'll try to study the genre and make a track in the Burtiis style...

But how could it be possible to fit a 34 minutes song in 10 Mb only? ;)

Maybe I should make a wildchip ….
and since I'm not going to learn from my previous mistakes,
pick a platform that I will use for my Dungeon Synth (WILDCHIP) entry,
first suggestion will be used.

Am I allowed to mix this style with breakcore or no? It's something I've been thinking about since before this was a battle, I can also make a traditional style version if that's really the idea.

Do Golden Axe and Turok Dinosaur Hunter music fall into this category? I always felt like the did but they have drums tho.

I would guess that "allowed" is up to the voters to decide ;)
I have the impression that percussion elements in general should be kept at a minimum, or be very subtle, breakcore tends to not have percussion at a minimum or be very subtle :o

Many dungeon synth work have percussions! But it's generally timpani, something that sounds medieval and epic, not modern stuff.

It will most likely be orchestral cause that's what I've been messing around with lately. Not a genre I'm super familiar with but hopefully its not too out of bounds...

a couple of my favorite DS works are :
kyndll ogg stein by Lord Lovidicus
realms of majickal sorrow by Old Sorcery
morketsvind - I (2014)
faery ring demo
as far as percussion goes tympani and other deep simple drum sounds along with tambourine seem to be typical. if you wanna be REAL AUTHENTIC you will use crappy old consumer keyboards and 4 track

I've always been a fan Era 1 Mortiis releases. I haven't attempted to make a track like this since high school and it's pretty difficult. After developing all the production habits and intuition, making a song with this kind of mood and production quality is really counter-intuitive. I'm planning to submit something authentic for this.

Unfortunatly most BotBiters are happy fellows who are rather dedicated to make pun and cheesy song titles. Are they hopeless for dungeon synth? Yep, DS is all about mood. If you're not in the mood, it's not DS. But the good thing is you can create witty content based on this statement. Pretend you're a depressive teenager who is longing to take refuge into a distant, epic, realm.

So instead of making cheesy titles such as "Lawnmowing my Garden", let's find something more inspired (and still cheesy) like "The enemies' teeth are filling the battlefield"

Do any of you DS aficionados have any recommendations for the 'Synth' part of this compo? I've actually written a track that I'm quite happy with but I've done it with modern orchestral plugins (Albion One) - its got some pretty Zimmer-esque movie trailer vibes. I'm pretty sure that's not in the spirit of the genre so I was wondering what some better options would be...?

It might be ok. There are several discussions whether it is still "true" to use good sounding devices for creating DS, instead of using cheap FM yamaha toy keyboards from the 90s. It's a bit similar to the discussions about fakebit :) So do whatever you want (hint: only cheap sounds are trve, of course).

A few months ago, there has been a DS compilation, and the requirement was to use the DSK Vst. I had never used it before, but it was rather satisfying, still sounding ok, but not too excessive. If you want to have a good sample, here it is (I'm also on it) :
