I don't feel like writing code for everyone to submit their ideas for musical themes. So how about we come up with a list togother here. Everything isn't set in stone yet. Once we have a list of themes everyone votes on their favorite three. Then we anounce the three picked by Playas and there is a 48 hour period to compose and enter a song/tune for the selected themes.

here are some of my theme suggestions --
racing
battling
exploring
in a dungeon
in a town
dead
victorious

Cool themes are: Victorious, Dead, Titlescreen / Introtune and Boss-Stage are good ones ;) So can't wait 'til 3xTheme Chip begins.. ;) here a little foretaste for an Introtune ;) :) :0

Rugged SIDmp3
...but not for this compo. I have released this tune for a C64 game called Juggler at a minigamecompo2006 as Introtune.

Is it additional necessary to know for which style of game a tune is for? e.g.:

Shoot'm Up
Beat'm Up
Jump 'n Run
Arcade
Adventure
Action Adventure
Logic
and so on...

All these suggestions make me "think specifics"

Rio makes a great point

we should really think of the game genre first, then the three categories.

Maybe... we should think of a video game concept first then the categories.

ex. "E.T.'s Revenge"

or "Super Popeye"

"Rally X: deathrace 98"

"Spelunkin' Downunder"

makes sense, no?

I work off blank's suggestion. Community should make some game titles and people try to create music for that game. Themes could be similiar to D II but as a game shit in your pants=Poopy Pantz Patrol, pirate's pick=One Eye's Burried Treasure. People, within the commuity, could then suggest characters or scenarios for game play ect. What would be cool is someone may write a tune for Detroit Drag-ster and others decide it is better for Awesome Wounded Warrior 6. If not game titles genre would be cool.

ok, a relisting---

intro/title screen
racing
Shoot'm Up
Beat'm Up
Jump 'n Run
dead
found item
battle
miniboss battle
finalboss battle
victorious
exploring / adventure
in a dungeon
in a town
water level
Arcade
Action Adventure
logic / puzzle
"I Won the Game"

Some of these seem redundant like three different types of 'battle'. And having genres listed like 'arcade' or 'adventure' when many of the themes suggest that type of game already.
What do you think?

Rio -- I hope some year I have the time to make an intro for minigame compo! VIC*20 rules!!

Blank -- Well, I don't know about keeping all three themes to one type of game or even to gaming at all... a theme could be just an emotion or action like -- happy, sad, dance, lawnmowing, etc... but let's see what the people think! Selecting a genre of game gets Playas more on the same page but it also puts a limit on the attitude of the music.

aClone -- I sent out the usual mass email but I haven't been plugging away at message boards either. Maybe this is like how we thought nobody was going to participate in Detroit II because no one was taking interest in the sample portion of the compo.

DDD -- "Awesome Wounded Warrior 6" is a great title for a game.

But I'll tell you all that I am more inclined to listen to Playas with chipist points about what goes on here rather than the rest of you.

Perhaps we could have another compo in the future where there is a video game title and people could enter music and graphics to be voted upon....

One of the things about this "future competition" may be that people work in teams...those 48 can be lonely. As for list - the genre's are redundant with the themes - you don't need explore/adventure and then Adventure, as you so keenly highlighted. Found item seems to conjure a sound not song.

I would sort the list in two lists, so that people have to choose in 2 steps (but thats only my opinion - really important is the first step)

Theme:
---------
intro/title screen
miniboss battle
finalboss battle
level: jungle
level: dungeon
level: town
level: water
level: evergreen
level: desert
level: ice
level: space
level: foreign planet
level: highlands
level: medieval
level: futuristic
victorious
bonusround
endscreen
dead

genre (aditional, not necessary):
--------------------------------------
Shoot'm Up
Beat'm Up
Jump 'n Run
Racing
Arcade
Action Adventure
exploring / adventure
Logic / Puzzle

so then i can choose:

level: ice -> Racing
level: space -> Action Adventure

...but problem is:

miniboss battle -> racing ;)

..because of that, the genre should be aditional.

i don't know if the genre thing is necessary -- we just want three themes -- do we get three different genres too or do we stick with just one? some of them could be levels too!

level: beat'm up
level: racing

perhaps we should stick with just one genre at the moment.

But i do like the idea of having a proposed title...
It reminds of that ATARI documnetary we watched when the programmers were simply given a name for a game and then told "Do it."

ex. "Quest for Peter's pan" title (roleplaying fantasy game)

3 themes (that I would like to hear)

in a town

underwater

boss battle

I don't think that genres should be of any primary concern to us.

What will help us most is 3 very vague theme guides so that there will be more variety in teh submissions.

I second DaFuS's 'underwater boss battle' btw

puke7, look in the marek badkowski folder and the adam bienias folder. those are my two favorites. coincidentally, they are the first two in the "various" folder. marek badkowski's tracks are all good, but "fad face" is way awesome. adam bienias's "bitter reality" set (especially "farewell") and "train" are really really really good. if this format's included in this comp i'll submit a track for sure... but it probably won't be too great.

Hi Puke7, in the members profile you can see witch "rank" your mods have become in the compos, but witch category is the "rank" row ? I see my Underwater Bubbles have place 6 of 32, but this is the "setting mood" category, it is not better to show the Best overall Rank or the main category ranking ?
