in 5th grade I was drawing around 150 one page comics. I still have most of them in a box somewhere.
fun times.
the stories were all very silly and for some reason, every single comic ended with the main characters dying in various ways.

maybe I shld give it another try for this monthly

@kleed I too was a 5th grade comic artist, although I don’t have that impressive number under my belt. A friend and I made a superhero satire comic where we were super powered kids defeating our teachers as the bad guys (a favorite technique was throwing an explosive diaper on the villain’s head). We had a kickass super mobile hidden beneath the recess playground toys. We kept the comic going through mail after my family moved out of town. A couple of these comics survived and my kids thought they were good stuff

Later on another friend and I did comics to pass the time in high school science and later had college classes together and did the same there but in flash animations. Comics got a little bit better in quality but sense of humor largely stayed the same lol

Edit: between these and dumb songs I made with the same friends in high school (e.g. Chewbacca belting out the Olympics anthem) perhaps this is where my love of collabs stems from

I will declare this now: anyone who does a Loss parody is getting at most 3/7's across the board from me.

Glad to see this battle is happening!

EDIT: also, don't feel the need to limit yourself to 4 panels -- you can fit more on a page!

I too have an iconic collection of elementary and middle school one-page comics and would-be comic strips. I read a lot of webcomics 20-somethin years ago in my early internet using days, and it shows, lol.

My BFA show was based on a comic strip I did for a couple years. :)

I'm not arguing with the rules but I do want to point out the validity of single panel comics. There's still that magic of progression in having at least two panels to indicate the passage of time but sometimes a single panel comic just gets it perfect. See "Cow Tools"

That's a fair point! My thought when proposing this battle (which came directly from Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics) was that multiple panels is the feature that sets comics apart from other visual forms, and if 1 panel also counts then this begins to look like an anything-goes graphxicist battle.

(That said, something that would be interesting to see and would fit the rules would be a collection of two or more single-panel cartoons on a common theme!)

It's been years since I read Understanding Comics but I do want to say that there were "proto" comics, as he put it, where the prose is put with illustration, but I've also "read" silent comic books that lacked prose entirely. The medium itself is frequently breaking any rules any academic will try to apply when defining it (Much like chiptunes 😅).

But saying "sequential art" would probably throw off too many folks.

i think the better question you should be asking is:

what's a page?

I think y'all are just goofin' but in case anybody missed it, this is addressed in the rules!

> "One-page" means it could hypothetically be readably printed on one page of a book or magazine.

Of course the question remains, how big is the book or magazine? Personally I would say just keep it "reasonable." Of course giant books/magazines do exist but that would be quite fatiguing to hold in your hands.
