This applies to Firefox, I dunno if it'll apply to Chrome or whatever other browser you're using - there are probably similar redirecting plugins/addons available.

Obviously we're super about the effort puke7 and the lyceum peeps have put into updating the site domain from .org to .com, until the issue gets resolved, if it will.

This, however, does still leave a lot of articles, comments, bios with references to the .org link. As most of these probably won't be fixed for a while, I decided to find a workaround, and this is a simple one.

Using redirector, I've made a rule that redirects all urls starting with https://battleofthebits.com to the .com variant.

Once you install the Redirector addon, open it, click "Create new redirect", and fill in the following information:

Description: BotB org to com redirect
Example URL: https://battleofthebits.com/browser
Include pattern: https://battleofthebits.com/*
Redirect to: https://battleofthebits.com/$1

Leave wildcard checked. Press save and you should be good to go.

If you find alternative means to get this to work in other addons please post em in this thread!

That works for me! I installed and set up the redirect based off of your instructions, given that I use Firefox by default.

Awesome! Good idea :-D
There is a version of the same redirector extension for chrome, so your setup works identically there as well.

alternatively: if you have a local DNS in your home you can temporarily force-reroute battleofthebits.com to the current IP of .com, and add a script in to fetch the IP of battleofthebits.com regularly to update that with. this isn't a terribly good idea but i recommend thinking about it anyways

What IP address should be used for /etc/hosts? Running dig shows 208.97.150.106, but that just directs to a DreamHost “site not found” error. Does <battleofthebits.com> not have a unique IP address?

the website will only go to the correct website if you're accessing the IP by an address name which goes to that website; DNS records changing does not cause dreamhost to stop accepting "battleofthebits.com" as a valid URL request when you end up there, for battle of the bits, unless this is removed by dreamhost (sometimes automatically) or puke.

and yes, typically websites hosted on datacentres will be in grouped IP sets on the public internet, but also restricting requests to an IP to direct to specific websites based on the requested address is good in general.
