Greetings,

I don't mean to ask for a new format (yet?), I speak about visuall battles, with a 3D bitpack... And I am just wondering if some people would be interested :) Maybe a good opportunity to test software and have fun, even if you never tried 3D!

interesting concept Castle!
imho for some ppl their PC is not powerful tho
might cannot handle the power of rendering so yeah

as an example, .obj (default format from Maya when it was called Alias Wavefront when it was an Irix exclusive, back in the late 80's and early 90's?) format would be really cool, we can create them even from a text editor or from scripting - Blender exports to (and imports from) this format easily, as i think most 3d editors (3dmax, cinema4d, lightwave, etc.) export them? i'm indeed all interested!!!!!! and perhaps some people even want to submit photogrammetry experiences, what can be really cool!

If you don't oversize image and quality, an image render can be fast.. We are not talking about an animation here^^ Also, rather than a format like .obj, keeping it visual let people use all the tools they want, and even add a text with gimp after for example.

I am also in favor of this idea
I've been learning 3DS Max in school and may be able to apply my skills to Blender or something... I like both the ideas of image renders and exporting, IDK how it should be done

Ok, that is enough people to start something! I will make a first battle with links to free softwares, 2HB and with a simple theme for the first one. Probably tomorrow?

so it would be like submitting rendered pictures only? (that optionally we can share their 3d file source in the comments?)

Yes. If 3D become popular, why not a 3D format, but we should at least check how many people can/want use a 3D software :p

Super down for this! I think it would be good if there were some constraint on the toolset, like voxel-based, procedural or 3d sculpted etc, rather than any 3d models. Could maybe be fun (for the voxel-based option) to define it as 3d pixel art, with the same resolution constraints, just adding an axis hehe.

maybe picoCAD
would be a good option?

also plugging the TIC-80 voxel tool
that I made awhile ago. we used this for an earlier battle and it was pretty fun

I "plan" (but open source idea, I mean each of you can do these battles!) ti add contraints later, and let people who discover 3D choose a tool they like. But if we hame enough people to make a Voxel battle not a boonloss, yeah of course, wwould be down for that. In the meantime, generic 3D seems more accessible, at least for a first 3D battle! Ok I will plan that, in... idk, 6 or 7 hours

Thanks petets for the recommendation. Yeah this one could be fun. Any free 3D software can have its own battle, I guess, But no Maya battle for example...

I am interested but currently I am busy learning some new stuff in my free time. also I usually only enter in majors, it would be cool if some majors would include “3D” at some point.

About the “computers not good enough” , I don’t think you need lots of horsepower just for a model or small scene.. Unless they’re highpoly and animated.. which probably isn’t the point of this.

Perhaps make it a “3D model” format or something. (with size limit)

I think it'd be more in the spirit of botb for OBJ to be the upload type, rather than an image of the 3D. that way it can be imported into other programs and observed at all angles, or even sent to a 3D printer!
