Since 2HBs and 4HBs just arrived, allowing for greater, yet still controlled stuff and things, we present to you this project... WHICH HAS OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED, FIRST BATTLE AUGUST 22ND

The Ultimate Hum: A BotB VGM OST inspired by beautiful pixel animation, made in battles

1. Host a series of eight Saturday Wildchip 4HBs at 3PM EST for each selected scene (AKA for each "level") with "noticeable inspiration" from NES/SNES
http://www.effectgames.com/demos/canvascycle/?sound=0

2. At the end of the series, vote for each battle whether we want to take just the top one... Or several within the battle if let's say two tracks have different feels like "general area" and "boss fight" and we want 'em both, I guess it's not rigid

3. When tracks are selected, host Pixel art 4HB for album cover based on the overall feel of the album

4. Host a final Remix 4HB, winner + 1 or 2 tracks we select will be added to album's end

5. Put all selected tracks in an album with Puke's blessing on Bandcamp

????

69. Profit!!!!

This idea was inspired by Midori sharing the forementioned website while we were at each other's throat about the definition of pixel art. I may or may not be exagerating

Fun idea, I like "soundtracking" things :) Even without the bancamp part, the project would be interesting imo.

Great to hear the feedback! I'll keep spearheading it until I feel there's enough visibility so we can go ahead with the planning and voting.

[snip]

Edit: I see. Is it legit to imply permission through battle participation (by saying it in its description)? Else I can just go around asking for permission after results.

I really like this idea. I got into music specifically, myself, so I could compose for my own games.

I meant the html5 animations. Whats the point of making music for it in OST form if it isn't represented in the cover art?

Oh, ooooohhh. I mean I originally thought it would be purely as inspiration, though I.. I guess we could do that too. Let me see what I can do

Sounds really fun! Personally, if this happens I think the format should be something like allgear or wildchip though, with an added guideline of "Genesis" or something like that. That way people could use whatever method they wanted to create the track with that sound. It would still be cohesive but would allow people to use different tools. I for one would not be able to make a quality Genesis track using a tracker in 4 hours. But I probably could using VSTs. That's just my opinion.

its a cool idea, i have a few thoughts

the thing with 4HBs is that they are kinda grueling. at least it was for me. (i understand that we probably wouldn't be making 4 minute songs for these, though) i got the feeling at the end of the first one (especially after the synclisten and results) that everyone was kinda pooped and wanted a break. i cant imagine having one of these every day. even once a week is a lot, i definitely couldnt commit to coming every time. i think it might be better to go with 2HB and then having the winner finish the track for the album if it's not complete yet. if you really wanted to stick with 4HB you may want to spread them out. either way, to maximize attendance you would want to have them scheduled ahead of time so people can adjust

the other thing that has to be addressed is format. i was going to say exactly what kgb525 said, but then he said it. so that's my best advice. i think they should be allgear/fakebit, and you can tailor the desired sound you are aiming for in the bitpack. the botbrs can handle being told to aim for a specific sound, we do it every XHB. on the other hand, if the format is something specific, you are going to have much poorer attendance because you are limiting the number of people who feel comfy battling in this

100% the Battles will be scheduled in advance, at a, or multiple, consistent prime time(s); probably going to alternate between two times within the same day to try and catch all musicians by the end. Is that a good idea?

Now the time between Battles is TBD indeed, though I do not expect everyone to be there at every battle, which isn't exactly an issue unless there's only like 3-4 entries in a battle lol. I'm thinking once a week is probably going to cut it, especially if we consider that would mean most artist would participate bi-weekly unless they're onallthetimeHARDCORE

But I absolute love your idea of picking out the winners and then letting them finish/polish/master it before release. Kind of like a "don't worry this is also kind of a trial run, you can finish it before release if you win" kinda deal. This would also potentially allow for collabs?

not fond of allgear/fakebit and terrible at fm so i might not join if that's what you guys are going for but i would gladly be voting. my dream project is a similar thing, that would make it to the cart release :) even if it's only a rom image to be played in an emulator

Here's an extra idea: After all the battles are done, the winning tracks selected, and finished versions of each track delivered, how about holding a final "Remixes & VIPs" 2HB?

I'm saying VIPs because I guess people could remix their own stuff idk

I'm definitely down to do this, thank you for asking me to join

But, I have a suggestion. BotB is a community of musicians AND artists, so... If an issue is that we cannot use those html5 animations for the commercial purpose of album art, because they belong to somebody else... Why not like... Have a couple separate "pre-battles" where we have art-focused 2/4HBs to make the "Level" designs that would be used as inspiration (and later album art) for the tracks?

Flaming, it's actually entirely legal to use art as inspiration for other art (especially like right here where it's an entirely different medium). And I was already planning to make an album art 4HB, as mentionned in the first post. Though the original artist has been emailed, and I am waiting on the reply to know where that's going!

This sounds like a really good idea! Maybe battles should be held at a different interval than once per week. If we had a battle every monday, for example, then someone who worked or had other reservations that day each week may not be able participate. Those are just my thoughts, though.
