Uncle SID-N00b needz HALP. I'm having issues understanding how
filter delegation on channels work in DefleMask, for example
I have 1 instrument with filter enabled (and init enabled), it plays fine in channel 1.

I have Another instrument with filter enabled, but it wont filter
on channel 2 or 3. not even with 1401 for all channels,.

Do I have the wrong approach here? I basically want the filter envelope to work for all channels, not just the first one.

For the record, the filter works for ALL channels if i use the first instrument with filter init, but that resets the envelope,
and that is what im trying to avoid.

@Strobe if you wanna deactivate filter on a certain channel in Defle, I believe you need to mark the option "apply filter to instrument", but with no filter activated 'on the target instrument'. I'm not totally sure, since I barely use the C64 side of Deflemask. Honestly, you really should go with GoatTracker. It's not that hard to learn :P

hey, if im making an adlib entry in .mptm (or even .s3m for that matter, as long as im doing it in openmpt) format, what limitations should i adhere to? (aside from the obvious ones such as no filters, no PCM samples, i mean more stuff like "how many channels should i use?" "is there a max number of instruments i can have?" etc etc)

edit 2: if i remember correctly, adlib tracker II has a channel limitation of 18 channels. so would a 18-channel mptm file be a valid entry, even though s3m only supports 9 channels, since adlib tracker II supports 18?

linked 2op instruments (to make a 4op instrument) take up 2 channels of space on adlib tracker, so keep that in mind if youre doing opl3 stuff beyond the usual realm of just extra waveforms.
really, what mptm needs is a player that can play it back on hardware that has an adlib soundcard, otherwise opl3 is more in the realms of a vst than it is support

If i'm not mistaken OpenMPT will not play more than 18 OPLx voices at once, and if you exceed that, it's just going to lead to voice stealing, but yeah for the real HW it's either 18-channels of 2OP instruments, and 9 for 4OP (if i'm getting it right they can be mixed, but 4OP ones will always eat 2 out of 18 voices)

Second, the manual states this card is capable of "stereo" music. Yes, the quotes are necessary, because the stereo capabilities are very limited. You are given ability to control output going to left or right channel by turning it on and off. That's all. So the sound can flow from very left side, center and very right side. No sound panning, no special stereo effects. :-(}

Also OpenMPT supports OPL3 features except for the operator count dumbed down to 2, but it might change soon-ish

A little psa since I just saw Chip Champ rant about non-working MAME:
MAME versions 0.193 - 0.204 had a bug in the F8 core which broke Sleizsa Trio. It's been fixed in 0.205 so either upgrade to that or stick with your legacy MESS builds :D

I think you mean an usb/midi keyboard, of course buy what inspires you and gets you to make music. But I'll say this, the last midi controller I bought went back into the closet and I just use my laptop keyboard.

But go for the usb/midi controller if you want to play more complex chords or really want to start playing some songs. (which in turn is also a way to learn to "compose" since by playing you see how songs (melody and progressions) are structered and use it in your own stuff.)

and honestly, I have tried to make a few tests to transcribe certain songs in MIDI format and using FL Studio by myself, and while I have managed to get fairly far in some of these, I have gave up countless times as well since I got way too impatient at the end and just... didn't finish what I started

I'm not sure if it's because of FL not being a very good tool to make MIDIs or not anyway, but if anything, I feel like using and learning how to use a MIDI/controller keyboard will definitely be a great learning experience for me, in quite a few ways, haha

MIDI controllers send velocity information (also aftertouch if its supported) which helps with a more organic sound. But if yer just doing chiptunes in a tracker a cornputer keyboard totally works. Also, I have no experience making MIDIs with FL, but iirc all of Strobe's MIDI entries were done in FL.

Re: chiptoon, trackers, MIDI: One of the goals of the big project that I've been working on for the past year is to make it possible to use the full power of MIDI in a tracker-like environment. Think "Chiptune Audio Workstation". So, like a DAW, but then specifically for chiptunes, and of course very tracker-y. @Strobe jsyk, SID-Wizard allows you to overclock up to 400Hz on PAL and 480Hz on NTSC.
Also, it can export to .sid without quickly running out of memory like in Deflemask. GoatTracker also allow you up to 800Hz but I don't know if it will run out of CPU time on hardware playback.

bnox, it's the rate at which the SID is updated. Normally updates are done once per frame (so, 50/60 Hz depending on PAL/NTSC). But there's nothing stopping you from updating more often, other than if you're trying to pull off some fancyshmancy demo eff eggs that eat all your rastertime. Eg. Pollytracker updates at up to 9 KHz and that's totally fine.
