first earnest shot at 'longer than a poem' creative writing in probably 15 years, and a bit tonally different than whatever i tried before as a teen. i had a good time with it. it feels a bit like exercising a muscle that hasn't had its day in ages. i started out just kinda writing without ideas in mind but found that focuses developed as i went, which was cool and serendipitous. i suppose it's not unlike music that spawns this way, just i have much less experience here than in music so it happened that way by necessity lol. altogether pretty pleased with this.

W h a t t h e !

This story has so much life!
From Christmas being less important the older the friends / family get, to this person apologising in such a way to feel better about themselves, this story truly has alot, and I mean, alot of life and care put into it!

Great job!!!

"Bitterness is brittle, it can't stand up to such force" YES holy shit "But I do believe in the give and take and I'm not sure you've got long-term give in you." YES!

The wry comment about the empty church parking lot, "the birthday party's over."

The overall feeling of "I'm not perfect but I'm stronger than I used to be" here is immensely enjoyable.

And you haven't written since *high school*? I demand you make a habit of this! Exercise those muscles!

I hope you don't wait 15 years to exercise the muscle in this way again, you've got some things to say, and a powerful way to say them.

To be honest this read unexpectedly made me tear up a bit. Thinking back on some of my experiences in coming to terms with the past (or attempting such and failing), I could almost picture myself sitting on either side of that bench, and this made me feel some kind of catharsis along with a kind of uncomfortable, but good, self conscious introspection. Jeez

hope you don't mind my saying so, but that's a really really great comment to hear, thank you. i would not have thought my writing to have that kind of power. i know my way around making music for the most part, but achieving that kind of resonance in text is a very different game. i'm genuinely shocked this won the format, shocked it even got a medal or a tin can... but i'm happy people evidently enjoyed it and especially to hear i had that effect on someone
