Here's a rare combo VGM. This one uses SAA1099 + YM3812/OPL2, which I think technically exists in actual hardware form as the Sound Blaster 1.0? I wanted to play around with the idea of an "optional expansion" or "compatibility version", where the main body of the track is written for the PSG chip (the SAA1099 in this case, or the Creative Music System part of the Sound Blaster 1.0), and extra voices which can be omitted are put onto the "expansion" channels (the OPL2 in this case).

In terms of composition, I was originally going for something like Jochen Hippel's Buzzer on the Atari ST but then started going in the direction of McAlby's work.

Also, it seems like older VGM players don't emulate the SAA1099 envelope stuff right. Render is from VGMPlay 0.51.0. It's also slightly different from Furnace's audio output but I don't know what's up with that. It's close enough though.

unique chip combo and very nice song
like the slow arp and how the start changes slightly every now and then
I also like the FM backing chords and synths, really like it when people mix psgs and FM / Sample chips

I like the "simple plus arrange+" aspect of this! It recaptures that childhood thrill of realizing that the PC version of FF7 secretly installed a Yamaha XG MIDI driver and going back to listen to a bunch of old MIDIs with a sleek glossy new sound.

OMG I remember that Yamaha XG MIDI driver, it really felt like a straight upgrade on all those vgmusic.com MIDIs

I faved this back then while voting, but didn't share my thoughts. The bass with its short notes and octave intervals sounds fun. The square lead with its arpeggio envelope adjustment sounds thick (and indeed, very McAlby-ish), especially when grouped in harmony with the other one. 1:21 pitch bending down white noise + descending notes were a welcome surprise. They help make the song feel distinct. I also enjoyed the slow attack pads. This one has a pleasant sound design overall.

ooh nice, everything is so precise - the percussion and leads and bass are all nice and snippy and snappy, all the little bends and vamps and quavers are exactly where they belong... this feels very very classic chiptune / demosceney, could easily loop on top of a neat graphic animation sequence.
