The beginning was very cool, and then it was very standard for far too long

Could you offer some constructive criticism? What about it was "standard"?

i think what mrwimmer was trying to say was that the spacey progression and moody arps of the intro belied the 4x4 dance beat and happy melodies that followed, which i guess is considered something of an LSDJ "standard".

personally i thought the juxtaposition of moods between the intro and the rest was a bit weird but the actual musical transition between the two sections wasn't bad. there were also a lot of clever little details like the swung hats and snares. it just needed more downtime after the beat first comes in and yeah it probably should've been shorter. but anyway welcome to botb!

Thanks for the clarity, Stepfilter! I needed that. If I were to defend myself, I suppose that what you said is exactly what I was going for. I was trying to capture a moment in a C.S. Lewis novel wherethe protagonist encounters a race on Mars whom he fears at first but who turn out to be kind and particularly skilled in the verbal/musical arts. My work does need work, though, since even this, which I consider to be my best track so far, isn't met with universal acclaim :P Thanks for the welcome. I look forward to doing lots of stuff here. Also, you've got the coolest logo!

Yeah, Sorry. I didn't mean to come off as rude. I don't think that the intro sounds scary at all! I think it sounds incredibly interesting and very inventive, I was just sad to see it slide into a style I've heard so much from other gameboy musicians. You should try looking into expressing that feeling of happiness in ways that aren't so ingrained in the musical lexicon I guess? That intro though. That is seriously some of the coolest gameboy stuff I've ever heard.

There are certainly aspects of this that are really good and the sound design of the instruments and effects are tip top, but it is the 4 to the floor stuff that lets the song down. There's enough ingenuity in here to make a 2-3min song without those sections. Keep on tracking, refining your art is the goal for all of us!

Thanks, gotoandplay :3 This whole thread has made me wanna experiment more. I'm currently working on an album of four to the floor songs that are each about 4 minutes long give or take, but when that's done, I'mma start pushing more boundaries.
