This is basically an abbreviated soundtrack / medley to a fictional horror-fantasy film with occult themes. Some of the sections are inspired by and slightly reference my fav dark/horror soundtrack music.

There are a million tweaks I'd still like to make, but overall it was a fun and challenging experiment in trying to connect many genres.

Chapters

Part I: Lifting of the Veil
Part II: An Ancient Warning Unheeded
Part III: Manifestations of Dread
Part IV: Deadly Rapture
Part V: Anointing the Chrysalis
Part VI: Spiral of Loss
Part VII: The Bones of a Reality

Made using Yamaha MU2000EX + PLG cards (SG, VL and AN). All onboard effects and sounds, no samples. Captured from the digital output without post-processing.

Yah this was my first time trying to sysex the crap out of this device and send lots of parameter changes throughout the track.

I was trying desperately to produce a MIDI file to attach to the sub until the last minute, but it was not playing correctly.. My setup for going from arrangement to midi file is too convoluted lol. I will figure that out and share the file somewhere & link to it here though!

you could use the MU2000's sequencer right? this is like the only use case I could see for that thing's sequencer

Loong story short, I tried, but there are some annoying limitations to it which prevented that from going smoothly :/ Ultimately it is me being dumb for using ableton with deeper midi-oriented projects. Been with it for so long that it is hard to switch to a more traditional DAW.

I'd start with Reaper or FL. yeah fuck ableton, paywalling sysex behind Max is so scummy

mark my words, the day I get a Yamaha MDF3 I will personally ship it to you and capture that MIDI so long as you send it back

Yeah and the thing with sysex / max for live in ableton, is that it doesn't help you produce a midi file at all, since there is actually no way to export a complete midi arrangement.

But it's a bummer, I've used several other environments like Logic, Cakewalk, tried Reaper also, but they mostly feel obtuse or dense with unnecessary clutter. I love the ableton UI and workflow paradigm, it is much more conducive to being creative than anything else I've seen. Maybe will start putting time into getting fully comfortable using Domino finally, it's nicely focused toward pure MIDI work at least.

Heh I actually have an MDF3, they choke on super dense midi streams though. The only hardware MIDI recorder I can get to reliably capture anything sent to it is the QY700.

Taking up Domino because Reaper is too dense and cluttered is like buying a pet horse because you don't have enough yard space for a dog.

Also, not to go off-topic here, but incredible song.

Thank youu! @Lint_Huffer lmao that's an amazing way to put it!

My trip is that focused tools encourage creative flow, or maybe the clutter is just in my brain, when there are too many paths available..
Ideally a tool doesn't present a broader range of possibilities than what is needed from it. Domino is visually dense, but pretty singular in purpose, maybe it's like the controls of an airplane vs the control tower at the airport haha.

Badass! Also kudos for the sysex work. I use reaper but have to admit that my writing/arranging hasn't taken me to the point where I'm needing to get that in depth with it.

this is epic in both the specific 'long, multi-act narrative' sense and the general 'thing that is ott good' sense
