Pent Up

Shortly before Spring Tracks started, my partner and I were goofily beatboxing, and she started going

"boots and pants and boots and pants and pants
and boots and pants and boots and boots and pants..."

At which point I said "That's in 5!"
But, she explained, that wasn't her intent; the pattern she was following was in 4/4, but alternated which beat had the boots and which beat had the pants:

"boots and pants and boots and pants
and pants and boots and pants and boots
and boots and pants..."

So I wondered what it would sound like to mash this rhythm up with a rhythm in 5/4, and I opened up the default new-song template in SunVox, and a couple of months later I've ended up with this.

This is the kind of beat I could tinker with forever and never really finish polishing, so it's probably for the best that I had a deadline to submit it here.

EDIT: Resubmitted. For some reason, SunVox didn't save my MultiCtl module's settings properly!

i did some math to try to generalize this property, the illusion of multiple periodicity -- my metric was amortized, normalized edit distance between successive periods of a shorter length than the actual binary sequence. if we discard sequences with runs of longer than 2 digits, this sequence (10100101) and 11011010 are the only sequences of 8 digits or less that have an amortized, normalized edit distance of 1/4 of less for a smaller period (5 in both cases). there are some 9- and 10-digit sequences that also fit the bill:

110101010 (7)
110110010 (6)
110110100 (6)
1101100100 (7)
1101101100 (7)

tho ofc the 6-period ones aren't coprime with the actual sequence length of 9. and ofc this info depends on me having done everything right

choice of "mode" seems important; these are listed in the "brightest" mode which may not be what you want to establish an initial sense of a different period

Pants up! Love the rhythm, complex but groovy. My favorite part was when the perpendicularish arps started ascending, around 1:34

that opening groove feels so versatile, in a really cool way where I was imagining all the different ways the song could unfold. it made it extra exciting to learn where you took it!
